Does anyone know what caused the big change for draws in WMU 520? In years past there would be 400 or more undersubscribed tags for late season antlered moose and this year there were like 50. I know the populations have been low is this why there was such a large change. Just wondering thanks!

The obvious answer would be that more people put in to be drawn there. Undersubscribed tags are just the leftovers from the draw applications, and really mean nothing other than the amount of people wanting to hunt there has changed.

The number of tags that were available in the first place, before the draw process, tells whether the Game folks think the population is up or down.

Check the stats for previous years, and see how many tags total there were available, how many guys applied, and what priority they had to be to have a chance to be drawn. The stats are public info, and I've used them in the past, to determine where to be putting in my draws.

Cheers

I had a buddy inquire with the local SWD right after the draw results They said they had not done a count study in that WMU for a long time. They think numbers are low. They reduced the number of tags for both ealy and late seasons. Wish they would of announced to us hunters that they were reducing the number of tags available prior to the Draw process.

Maybe numbers are low because the local First Nations has a $10 000 first prize for biggest moose taken and I know of some shooting up to 50 moose each- cant tell me they are keeping ther meat with $10G on the line.

Before there use to be close to 500 Undersubscribed tags in WMU 520 for many years. Cash cow in my books.

We been hunting in that zone for 20 years. BEen lucky on the draw with a priority 0 and still getting drawn for my good friend and I for over 13 years since it went to draw. Are group is a bit bigger now (7) but at least we got 2 tags for this season. Our group didnt take more than 2-3 moose in the best years...especially if some of us had cow elk tags. I will also mention that the wolf population has increased through-out the WMU 520 zone.

I know of lots of hunters that didnt get drawn so no Moose camp this season for them.

Thanks Mighty Peace, I was also used to the same number of tags in this zone for years. I agree the wolf population is up and the moose are down, but that was a pretty big drop in tags over a one year period. Like you said it would have been nice to know. I know about the overhunting by some that is going on up there also.
Gotta look elsewhere for this year I guess.

I am wondering how many WMU's have seen moose tags reduced.

I hunt out of 528, and all the late season tags are gone now. That has never happened, even when the season was over there was always 50 tags left.

Anyone else suspecting fewer tags issues in the Peace region.
