Alberta vs British Columbia.... goods and bads about hunting

The time has come when a man get the chance to choose a place to live.
Not the exact location - if the man is married - but at least the province.

A lot of our members have lived / hunted in both provinces.

What are the pluses and minuses of each AB and BC?
Number of tags over the counter and tags in the draw (please separate the two)... hunting opportunities, the percentage of crown land, parks that can't be hunted, styles of hunting for the species mentioned, pretty much all that can be said.

What are the differences compared to Ontario?

I'm not going to compare the job opportunities, but that too is to be considered.....

Northern Ontario is nothing like the SW . Hot, muggy and boring, with nothing more to hunt than neighbour's cat..... it sucks.

General opportunity and success rate would probably go to Alberta but it is really too close to tell.

I live in BC and if your looking for lots of animals go to alberta muleys and whitetail excellent . If your looking for elk sheep and goats then BC is the place to be .The on unsettled equation is in the praires is the acquistion of the land and who owns it .Permission is the biggest factor I find but I have no problems with it being granted.In BC we have alot of crown land so if you see a road closure general speaking your in good elk deer and moose country. Love hnting here its out my backdoor but still have loads of fun hunting in alberta and saskatchewan too. Try them both and you ll know what I mean . Good luck and happy hunting.
 
If you are looking for work in the engineerng field, then I would say Alberta is the place to be, and the hunting here is the bonus. Trophy whitetails and mulies, elk, moose, bear, predator and gopher hunting, some sheep & goat opportunities (but BC has us on the sheep/goat). Draw system in both provinces for several big game species.

I can leave my house and be hunting every big game species listed above except sheep/goat within 5 minutes from town. Easy to get evening hunts in or a early morning elk hunt in the rut, and be to work by 12pm or earlier(if can get part of a morning off)

I hear Alberta is about the nicest place for Ontario exports to call home, very similar across the board - only difference is timezones, oh and the streets in Alberta are paved with Gingerbread, and beer is free oh and ratio of women to men is 63 - 1.
 
Alberta or BC....either one just stay close to the mountains......northern BC / Yukon border is great for big moose. Fishin' is better in BC by far....But there is something to be said for being an Albertan.
 
I grew up in BC and recently moved to Alberta for work. I would agree with much of what has already been said. Pretty much a tie. Lots of crown land in BC but you sometimes have to deal with other hunters for competition depending on the area. In Alberta, you could be one of only a few the a land owner will allow on his property.

If you are a true hunter, then it really doesn't matter what you're after, you will go out and hunt what is available! Good luck in your choice!

Oh, in Alberta you get Ralph Bucks...
 
Considering the pros and cons.......I have lived in both for a total of 40 years.......they are about the same, give or take. Lots of big game opportunities.

Also, both have too damn many people and they are growing. They also have too many artists and enlightened types.....BC has always been that way , but Calgary and Edmonton are catching up rapidly.

Someone has rose colored glasses on and thinks that the sun rises and sets on BC. It doesn't. All provinces have strengths and weeknesses........you have GreenPeace, the Sea Shepherd Society and .....it escapes me for the moment......but some anti-trapping types. Oh ya and anti-logging, anti-mining, anti-..............you get my point. BC is great.....it is a beautiful province, but it ain't perfect.
 
oh yea and back on topic , I didnt stay long nuff in grande prairie alberta but did see a nice sized heard of 15 caribou at 117km on the warehouser main road up in redrock country 1 morning as well as the resident elk herd beside our camp on the wapeti river and several moose up in redrock as well dont know what the hunting regs are there I wwas there for a month last january

WTF does this list mean? Because whoever came up with it better read thier hunting regs again, And maybe read Albertas while your at it :rolleyes:
