I just got a survey invite from ibm.ca, about hunting, on behalf of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, sent to the address I only ever used at albertarelm.com

So if you purchased an Alberta license online, IBM knows about it, has your email address, and knows what licenses you purchased (at the very least).

You must have forgotten to unclick a box giving them the chance to spam you.
I didn't buy online, but I did offer my email address to SRD for certain updates and I haven't gotten anything from IBM.

They also know it's highly likely you own firearms.

Crooks at IBM? :ar15:Lets hope not!

I don't think so... usually I check that kind of thing pretty carefully, but it's possible.
I believe IBM is on contract under SRD to manage our draws.
IBM manages the whole site (IBM logo in the lower right) so I guess they had it from day one. Didn't notice that before.

That was pretty much the root of my concern.

Lazy Ike's right, IBM's been doing it since Christ was a carpenter. (or at least since the interweb's been commonly online)

As a side note, we got our hunting survey today, via email; covered all win holders at our email address. Completed it honestly, as always.

The entire WIN system was designed and is run under contract by IBM for ASRD. Fishing licenses, hunting licenses, draws, etc. IBM has had this information for what, a decade now?

FYI, the surveys used to be done by AFGA associated club members who spent many hours phoning people and asking questions. Starting this year they will be done on-line. This is not the same thing as the CFC/RCMP releasing contact info to a polling company, it is part of effective wildlife management in the province.

If you have a POL, or R/PAL, the baddies have access to the data. It would be completely naive to believe that at least one person at CFC/RCMP has not sold the data base to less than desirables. Or, perhaps no one has heard of folks like CPO Walker, who sold comm codes to the Soviets for over a decade, just for the money (or the ego trip, more likely.)

Basic security screening for silly servants is laughable. Until military, or I suppose RCMP, need clearances beyond SECRET, these days it is a routine pro-forma, with intellectual curiousity taped in the OFF position. Why anyone gets cranked when a government department contracts out our personal data is beyond me. Wrong? Of course. Routine, and the price of living in Nannyland. At least private contractors may, just may, vett their employees or move them off sensitive files if their spidey senses make them suspicious.
