Alfa Proj Stainless models....fit / finish???

So $9.00 per moon clip is a little dear considering I'd need about 40 or 50 of them, but what's with the 9mm short cylinder?
They offer it with long & short cylinder...
So why?

Shorter OAL but still have a 4.5" barrel.

And the new S&W 986 is similar as well.

So the big question is.... "Is the S&W more than twice as good as the Alfa?"

Or to put it another way...........Assuming you want the gun for punching holes in paper and casual range use is the Smith worth the extra $700?

For twice the cost, I don't think so. The Alfa is pretty good value as it is, and the lockup and quality deem it on par to a S&W.

I'd still buy a S&W just to own a well built and made firearm, but if you're a plinker, go with the Alfa and spend the rest on good ammo. You'll be quite pleased.

Can we get those guys who have AP revolvers to post some nice closeup self-taken photos of their guns so we can all assess the fit/finish for ourselves?

There's nothing like a good pictures thread for assessing a gun, and it's always fun to show off you guns...

Fit is excellent, finish is also good as far as no tool marks etc. ,but it's not a deep blue like a classic S&W.

If you really need 50 you could probably negotiate a better price.

Why do you need so many?

Here's a few.......

It's not glossy blued like on classic S&W but it's still good.

Cableguy thanks for the pictures! You're alright.

It looks like a nice gun. So I guess my question has become 'Why is Alfa Proj not regarded more highly; what are the knocks that keep it from being more respected?'

I think it would be nice to have a 9mm revolver if for no other reason that 9mm ammo is cheaper than .38spl.....

If it was a case of the Alfa selling in the 500-600 range vs 800-900 for a Smith 9mm I think I'd go S&W without thinking to much. With the 9mm Smith's around $1300 I'll have to give these some more thought.

I have heard/read some negative comments on the Alfa's reliability around the net but OTOH a couple of 9mm Alfa owners here have posted very positive reviews.

They're very well respected in Europe.

As Can-down said, they are just beginning to trickle over here. We've been so used to S&W's, Taurus, Ruger, etc... nobody has had a chance to really remark on Alfa Project guns, yet.

I'm sure in time they'll gain a following here, you can't beat them for value.

Here's a review I did with some pic's of the internals as well. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1032008-Project-Alpha-Model-9261-Review-Updated-with-Picks-of-the-Trigger-Mechisms

I'm really liking my 9261 and it's holding up great after ~1500 rounds. I'd say the fit and feel is better than my Rugers. If Ruger made a dedicated 9mm DA/SA revolver, I would still buy the project Alpha. If Project Alpha made a 45acp revolver, I think I would still stick with my S&W 625. The lockup on the 625 just feels more solid, and the timing and feel of the trigger return is much smoother. On the Project Alpha, there are three distinct clicks for the trigger return. I`ve sometimes missed the 3rd click which is the cylinder locking lug releasing - so the next trigger pull just jammed because the cylinder is still locked up and can`t index to the next round.

So, other than looks and allowing for a shorter overall length of the gun, is there any difference between the unfluted short cylinder and the more traditional looking one?

another question....has Ruger come out with a 9mm revolver yet? ...is one in the works?

They have been for sale in the US under the Czechpoint brand for over a decade. They were garbage when first imported, I remember reading this test where the gun #### the bed completely.
http://www.gun-tests.com/issues/19_3/features/357_Magnum5405-1.html

They seem to be better now, but I would put them below Ruger as far as revolvers go.

I must agree, it is below Ruger.

But only in price.

I own a late GP100 and find the AP is a bit better.

My Single Ten and SP101 in .22 both trail in fit / finish to my all steel .22 AP's

This is only an observation as of the past 5 years that I've noticed with Ruger's QC...simply appalling.

I just ordered a 4.5 inch stainless .22 yesterday. If s&w still made a 5 inch model 63 I would have went that route but this is one of the few options in this size and barrel length. I also prefer the look of ap over the ruger and I'm not crazy about fiber optic sights either so I'm really hoping this turns out to be a quality gun. I'm gambling a bit here I feel.

You will be pleasantly surprised.

Absolutely no gamble.

It might be a gamble with some other brands these days.

Funny you mentioned the Model 63. I just happen to have one in a photo with my short cylinder 9mm.

I also own the 2251 in 4.5" blued and it rocks on my 617.....imho.

Why do you need so many?

50 isn't really a lot...
only 300 loaded rounds.
Consider the round count of an IPSC match plus a percentage for possible reshoots plus clips you dump with rounds still on them plus maybe a few spares for the ones that get stepped on and warped and all of a sudden 50 seems kind of short supply.
I'm thinking I have well in excess of 100 for my 625 and have never felt I'm hoarding.
I like the idea of the 9 in minor; I handled a 357 with the short barrel and it felt good but the 38/357 are too long for the IPSC game ( short cartridge will clear quicker coming out).
It really comes down to the "feel" of the short cylinder- the long felt great but the lightness of the short coupled with the shorter OAL may be the better ticket.
Perhaps a call is in order?
