In about a decade, natives in BC will be negotiating with people that have zero connection to the historical events here and whose own ancestors have suffered multiple invasions and takeovers far worse than anything that happened here. My advice is settle now, because when the majority of voters are immigrants, there will be no appetite for grand settlements.

What settlements have been signed since the originl treaties?

Lots, try google, takes up too much firearm related bandwidth. They're about to sign a settlement for old Kapyong barracks(PPCLI) in Winnipeg for instance, going to be an urban reserve. Lots of Hydro related settlements, not to mention numerous other farm land deals within MB alone. As in BC, I'm sure total claim is in excess of actual land area, not to mention the fact Metis now lay a claim as well. Current news is rights to mining as well.
I don't have time to list them all now, but google will keep you informed for hours/days/weeks, if you're so inclined.

The whole concept of treaty negotiation is laughable. Tell you what, rise up in arms and we can settle this again, or enjoy the benefits of healthcare, indoor plumbing, and not being enslaved by your neighboring tribe of "noble savages", and STFU. Benefiting from civilisation automatically removes you from any legitamacy of claims of being robbed of something you never owned. Enough holding me hostage over things someone elses great great grandpa did to your great great grandpa. I don't care about either of those guys, they were probably both a$sh01es. Don't you treat me like one because I feel no guilt over it. Sheesh, if your going to conquer a people, make no appologies, it will bite you in the ass everytime.

As for those that don't take the handouts: My hat's off to you, fellow countrymen. Respect.

Well, I just lost my hunting spot. Does it say anywhere if roads will still be acsessable through the land claims?

Approx. 130% of BC is claimed. The bands were involved in disputes and wars long before the West showed up. Slavery was common as well. As was starvation when things went badly or another band seized a prize spot. Each family/clan also held territory within the claimed lands and would be none to pleased to see a rival family on it.

Existing public roads would be unchanged.

Remember that this is not a done deal - attend any meetings that may happen in your area about this, sign any petition that is available. I know that the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters isn't very popular around here (CGN), but they have been opposing this since it became public knowledge. I will be contacting them to see what we can do to oppose this deal.

Nothing but bending over backwards....

If you live on a reserve and off the land, sure no problem > don't pay taxes > but don't expect any assistance of any kind
If you live within a normal population > pay your taxes like everyone else > and tap into all the programs that are out there

To give them some more reserves, no problem knock your boots off....to give them a quarter of a province.....

I have yet to see another country, culture, or race who was taken over by any means (settlement, invasion, war, etc) be given such special treatment anywhere else in the world - only Canada....yet it has happened all over the world to many much more significant degrees. Was it right - absolutely no. Did people suffer - absolutely yes. But it was the past and the past was a ruthless world. You can't change the past so give up this reparation crap because I don't think I deserve to pay for the mistakes of others when I am a hard working average joe who is nice to all.

Solution: Give them all of Quebec :stirthepot2: as they have something in common > they want there own land, they don't want to be Canadians, and they want to leach off of Canada while doing it. :stirthepot2:

I don't understand why people have so much hatred and animosity towards Aboriginals. It is and was the government who created this mess. The government put these people on reserves to keep them away from society, and to keep them under control. The government has over generations created a people who are in short, reliant upon the government for their handouts. So why is it the Aboriginals fault?
Is it fair that these people get preferential treatment over pretty well all other ethnicities in Canada? Absolutely not!!! As previously stated, the government is at fault here not the Aboriginal.
As for the closure of reservations, the government doesn't want to have Aboriginals spread out all over the place. The general public probably doesn't want this either. These disagreements are exactly what the government wants, to keep people divided. Opposed groups of people are much easier to control than united peoples.

They are free to travel and migrate to whichever area of Canada they choose, just like the rest of us. They are also free to exercise their culture and former way if life wherever they choose. However, neither of the former choices comes with monetary aid from the government, therein lies the issue and the reason they don't want to move away from the reserve.

So I ask, how is that my fault?

Try re-reading the post bud. I didn't say it was any individuals fault. I specified quite clearly "the government". Unless of course "you" are the government? In that case it is you fault!;)

The Constitution Act took effect in 1982....Who was in power then?
