Guess?
Hey guys!

My only shotgun is a Norinco Model99 Coach gun and I love it! I finally took it out for a Trap shoot (my second trap shoot) and I hit 28 of 50 targets. I would have hit more, if it wasn't for the shooter....:D

Anyway, being new to shotguns, I was wondering what is an affordable all-around shotgun for someone thinking of getting into hunting? I would prefer something in a black synth stock.

Cheers!

Berger

Benelli Nova or Super Nova. The rest are just pump guns with black stocks, or are less affordable.

Remington 870? Black stock? That would make it an Express and if it was best that certainly would be a long shot:D

You are entitled to your opinion as am I ---- I have owned every make and have shot every model of shotgun I can get my hands on and I now own two 870's --- best shotguns I have even laid my hands on by far.

Pretty broad statement there on ownership and shooting so perhaps a bit more insight on what you've owned and shot as to what guns were good and not so good.

No contest that the Remington 870 has a proven track record and the Wingmaster would be one of the better pumps on the market. But they make some very basic Express models. So in buying a 870 you don't always get the best shotgun just in the 870 name.

The Benelli pumps having been around only the last several years are proving very durable and every bit as good or better than the 870's. But you pay for what you get as the price line is closer to the Wingmaster. No hesitation going with either the Benelli or Wingmaster - just my preference as not a fan of the Express 870's.

You didn't specify just what you mean by affordable if that means under $500.00 or $1000.00, etc. Don't overlook the used market in nice semi's and O/U's as bargains out there to be found. I've never shot one but hear lots of good things on the Baikal MP153 which for a semi that digests 2 3/4"n - 3 1/2" all for under $600.00 ( with a black synthetic stock ) may fit your budget.

Thanks guys. I see the debates are just as fierce here as elsewhere...:)

Yes, I should have specified what I find affordable. I was thinking of something under $500.

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I am not adverse to getting a used one. I do like the looks of the 870 and some of the Mossbergs, so I will keep reading through this forum.

Mossberg 500, Remington 870, and Wichester speed pump are all great hunting shotguns at an affordable price

I've owned a few shotguns, so please inform me why a Wingmaster is vastly superiour to an Express.

The middle shotgun is a four shot model, and will take any dismountable hunting barrel for an Ithaca M37 above serial # 855,000. All metal parts are steel, considerably lighter than an 870.
Yes it kicks more, but with a good recoil pad this is lessened. If you are walking more than shooting (upland or big game vs waterfowl) who cares.
Lefthand friendly, as is.

The 870 is a very, very good gun and I've owned several but if it's the best shotgun "by far" you've laid your hands on then you probably haven't laid your hands on many shotguns.

The 870 express is a great value and very reliable. The issue that I have heard a lot of guys complain about with it is the fact that the finish is poor and is very prone to rust. I know a guy who is meticulous with oil and maintenance and he still has some corrosion on the outside of the barrel. But, that said, that doesn't effect it's operation. The wingmaster is blued, as far as I know and is much more weather resistant. I believe that the mossberg multi barrel combos are a little better value, which may be of interest as you mentioned a $500 budget. I am a lefty and one of the reasons I chose mossberg was for the ambidextrous tang safety. The mossbergs have aluminum receivers and are about 3/4 pound lighter than the 870's. This is a blessing when you are carrying, but the recoil is a little stronger and the swing is not as smooth for longer measured shots. But as is pointed out here by the more experienced guys, handle them all, shoot as many as you can and get what fits you the best. The 870's just don't fit or work for me personally, so I avoid them. I can't hit as many clays with them as other guns.

Well apparently you haven't owned enough shotguns to appreciate the time and detail to quality a bit more attention brings. Yes, the function in the Express and the Wingmaster is the same but the quality in form, fit and function is not.

If all you want is the basics fill your boots with the Express as that is what they are designed for to cut production cost.

I made no mention as to vastly superior but the Wingmaster is clearly better quality from the fit and finish of wood and blueing.

To sum it up you get what you pay for so consider yourself informned.

I have the pleasure of shooting a friends $12,000 "ceaser guarini" (my spelling may be wrong), quite often. I cant help but tell him he had too much money to blow...then I proceed to shoot more clays than him every Sunday with my M58 Sportsman!!! hahah

A co-worker of mine bought a beretta (somthing or other)...all I know for sure, is it was 2400.00, and its ugly as ####. He ordered it special...it went onto a back order...then there was a shipping issue. It was 8-mos start to finish and the choke threads in the barrel were stripped. He had to send it back

I'm not bashing these higher end guns by any-means, just trying to figure out... "why?"

Are you 10grand and up guys friggn mental??

Perhaps you should have a sober second thought before you go flinging those comments around as your holding yourself out to be a total a**. It's quite apparent you have no idea what you are talking about.

Your welcome buy the club anytime to put your shotgun where your mouth is..
