Many have used "shotty" as a term for shotgun for years in SA while on Safari.
Some don't find it offensive, others do.
I rarely use it as a term to describe my shotguns, although I do use "scattergun" often!
FWIW, an 870 with a slug barrel and a 28" barrel with chokes would do most people just fine - I have three of them and they are great for loaning to those that do not own their own guns....

Well I just picked up(yesterday) a Maverick (by mossberg) 88 from Cabellas(SIR) here in Winnipeg. For 235 bucks after taxes not only did I get a 2 3/4 or 3" shotgun with a vent-rib 28" smoothbore barrel, but also a box of 25 tager load shells to try it out with. The maverick 88 barrell interchanges with ANY mossberg 500 barrel whether it be an 18 1/2" security, a fully rifled 24" slug barrel with scope rails, or any other barrel available. Mossberg barrels for the 500 are anywhere from $84 to $170 USD. The action is smooth, and the 28" vent-rib comes with mid point and far bead sights. As well, using the 500 barrels or the barrel that comes with the maverick you can use any Accu-Choke choke available. I should mention it comes with one choke pre-installed but I don't remember which one. GREAT DEAL if you ask me.
