I am planning a hunting trip (small game) and want to know what kind of pump shotgun would be the best in the 300 to 400$. The guy at Lebaron was pushing a basic rem 870, what do you think.

Thanks people!

I have seen a couple 870 Express's coated in rust after only light rain.

Other than that I think you get a little more out of the Remington then the Mossberg as long as you don't get a lemon.

The finish on the Mossberg will hold up better though IMHO. My Maverick 88 has been through hell and back and soaked for days, without a hint of rust.

Can't go wrong with a Rem 870 or a Mossy 500.

Just some food for thought. If you are going to use the shotgun for large game at some point; get a two barrel package (one being a rifled slug barrel). It's cheaper then buying a second rifled barrel later. A smooth bore with rifle sights works well with rifled slugs (to about 50-70 yard--for me anyway YMMV); but with a rifled barrel and sabot slugs; I personally have no issues going to 150 yards.

Some people choose to shoot farther then I do, but that's a personal choice.

avoid the 870 express unless you like to tinker. mine would run everything but cheep low brass target ammo. I had to polish the chamber with a brake hone to keep it from jaming. Dont be cheep, get a wingmaster.

I snagged my mossy 835 for $300 several years ago. the ability to shoot 3.5 shells is handy. interchangeable chokes, and rifled barrels available. if you found a deal like that, you'd be holding a versatile combo gun for about $500.

The best value is an old 870 Wingmaster with the choke opened up if required. This should fall within your budget.

I'd go with the 870. Wait till the Toronto Sportsman Show is on Lebarons usually runs a no tax sale. I just picked up a Versamax when they had the last no tax sale. There prices are tough to beat and no tax on top of that = a deal! You won't be able to get one used for that price.

If it's just small game hunting - why not get a single shot? Pick up an old CIL, Cooey or Remington on the exchange and go hunting! Nice light carry. Any small game hunting I do is with my single 20ga. I rarely need more than one shot at rabbits or birds in quick succession. Of course if you plan on fowl later and only want 1 shotgun then by all means get a pump!

mossberg 535 3 barrel combo $579.00
28" accu-choke
24" turkey fiber optic sights
22" fully rifled cantilever slug

I got one of those and have been very pleased.

I just took her hunting for Turkey last year, but did well with the 28" barrel on the trap range (got 22-23 out of 25 on a few rounds) and had good success sighting in the deer barrel with Win Rackmaster Slugs at 100m. The camo is great for waterfowl and it's light enough to carry in the bush for upland game.

You might pay a bit more, plus the scope and rings when you finally get around to it, but it should pay of in the longer run.
