Glad this topic came up. The book was excellent as were both movies. One of the best WW2 movies IMO was The Thin Red Line about the war in the Pacific. I am looking forward to seeing War Horse also.
I really liked the "Thin Red Line" as well. That one scene when the Americans take the upper hand and attack the Japanese post is one of the best WWII scenes in any movie IMO. Especially the momments before when the Japanese are shown ready for the attack. My Grandfather was in Manila during the battle of Manila and I actually remember him telling me about how "animalistic/non-human" hand to hand combat was like. In fact he was injured by an american by mistake, so was my grandmother. I think that scene above portrayed that very well.
