Hello all finally ready to roll by first few loads. Read 2 manuals and have done lots of research I'm definitely not one to jump into anything right away until I feel confident. I'm looking at first to start with my hornady handbook loads. Just plinking so a-max or something else. Question is I'm thinking of getting started the weekend and have no powder. I am located in peterborough and don't mind to drive a little to get it. Think I'm down to the allusive varget, imr 4895 and Alliant RL-15 any suggestions on shops that could have stock? I will not be doing high volume so if it meens not the most competive prices( I don't mind PMs are fine aswell)Also only shooting out to 200yards so was thinking 150-155 grain projectiles or 165-168. Not sure about RL-15, but Varget is so popular it might be hard to get.

4895 would probably be a good powder to start with. It's a 308 go to standard that works well in many guns. If you can get your rifle to shoot well with it, then I'd start playing around with the more expensive stuff. Varget can be hit and miss. Some guns love love love it and some guns can't stand the crap, so it's hard to go wrong with some good old 4895.
 
I'm in the same boat as you. Read all the books. Several times. :) Read up on here a lot. Now its time to try.

After doing much research, I have gone with a bit of H4895. Both the IMR 4895 and the H4895 sound like a very versatile powers to start with. They are not the same but apparently close. The H4895 is supposed to be more temperature tolerant and the less variables I have to deal with, the better for a beginner reloader such as myself. Or that's my theory anyways. :) I just ordered some of that and some .308 Sierra 155 PALMA bullets from Henry at Budgetshootersupply. I have ordered from him before and had top service and good prices.

Also ordered some 55 grain .224 lake city bullets to try the H4895 with as well.

Hopefully if all goes well these will go bang, not pop, fizzle, or KABLAM!! tinkle tinkle tinkle

Accuracy Plus on Highway 7 as you are coming into the east side of Peterborough is your first stop. They should have everything you need.
 
"...Just plinking so..." You don't need a match grade bullet for fun shooting. Any bullet will do for that. However, you need to work up the load anyway, so work up the load for the bullet you plan on using. I'd be thinking a 165 grain hunting bullet. A 165 will kill any game you care to hunt without a lot of felt recoil.
IMR 4895 will do, but IMR4064 gives more consistent accuracy.
Oh and reloading is not rocket science. Don't over think it. You've read the manual, so assuming you've got the dies set up properly, get a move on. We're here if you need help.
 
I just bought 8lbs of IMR4895 off Budget shooter supply. $268 to my door. He still has one listed. I have been using H4895 with very good success, I have heard good things about the IMR as well just a little bit more temperature sensitive.

Go to your local shops and see what they have for powder, if your manual lists it buy a pound and just fool around with it to get used to reloading. You can use almost anything except the real slow powders in a 308. Now of course some will work better then others.

Good luck with the 4320. An under utilized powder so you don't read about many outstanding accuracy stories on the net. 4320 was the first rifle powder that I bought in 1976 to use in my 3006 BAR. I still have part of that can in my basement. Decided something a little quicker (4064) might be better in the gas operated selfloader.

I've had good luck with 4064 in my Norinco M14 as well. Win 748 is worth a try in the future as well. It's a ball powder that meters great and is usually well priced and available. I think I remember reading somewhere that it was developed for the American military for use in 7.62 NATO.

Let us know how the 4320 works out. I should use up that part can sitting in the basement
 
Question for you guys all going well, hornady a hand book states a C.o.l. Of 2.800" first one I set up went past to 2.797. I'm assuming something like that is still acceptable? It does not give me a max and and min?
 
While I'm also a newbie reloader Ive got about 700 rounds under my belt at this point. My 308 rifle seems to shoot well with a 155 grain bullet with COAL of 2.75". 2.797" is fine.
