All-round choice for backpacking/hunting/predator defense

I love bear defense threads! You should really invest in a helmet as your more likely to get killed by a falling branch than a bear, no joke.lol

only matched by Red Dawn threads !!

Except that's getting more real by the day from our own "state".

Stats are funny this way. What group are we looking at here? Average bear attacks per 100k people in Canada? What if you narrow that down to hunters in areas with high bear concentrations? What happens when you narrow your sample pool down to rural areas with numerous garbage bears? You're also not very likely to die from having your home invaded, but you prepare for bad situations. I've had more close encounters (<30m) with bears in a year than most people have in a lifetime, albeit not expressly dangerous ones.

But that said, it's also why I'm interested in getting something that can have some versatility applied.

All this what platform is best is pointless if you don't shoot it a lot. Proficiency with said platform is key and that requires ammo . your best defense is being proficient. Get shooting or become bear #### when the day comes.

To be fair, most stock pumps only hold 4+1 2-3/4" anyway.

Easy to rectify that in a pump gun in Chinada, not so much on a semi auto.

Honestly though, how many rounds do you think you’re going to fire off with a charging bear? I’m guessing you’re lucky if you get a second shot off, bears move bloddy fast. If a bear gets within my no go zone I won’t have time to fire 4-7 depending on which gun is in my hands, if it’s far enough away to do that it’s not a real threat to be honest.

Some good info in this post, one maybe 2 shots off. Most people don't believe how fast bears, even big ones, can move at a full charge. Ask me how I know.:sok2

all true.

They move like 40km'h. We move at like 8km/h ?

I spooked a grizzly at work in 2019, was on a quad at the time in 5th gear going pretty fast on a big flat sweeping turn. When I can around the corner and the bear saw me it ran away from me across the lower cut block, it easily out ran me. They are unbelievably fast for a large bodied animal.

indeed they are VERY fast.

Having experienced being charged by a bear and having to take it down, I can tell ya I'm not even worried about semi-auto or larger mag capacity like many seem to be.
I understand why people would be thinking this but it's not married to the realities of the experience.

You better hit with the first one !!

Which suggests the answer. Choose an SG you can maneuver on target quickly, choose the appropriate ammo, get out and practice getting a good first round hit on a mover, and a follow up incase you get REALLY lucky for a second shot. I'll take a pump over a semi for reliability in this application any day.

After that you're more likely to need a spare pair of underwear or a will.

Kind of strange little tidbit Ithaca shotgun trivia: Sometime in the 1970s(?) the LAPD approached Ithaca desiring a more foolproof rear sight for typical police engagements with the issued M37, such as 25 yards. And a patridge squared off style resembling a pistol rear sight. No elevation stepped ramp.
There are really great and only found on the Deerslayer Police Special barrels. A fixed sight, very handy for close bush.
The front site was unchanged but I heard a rumor the high visibility acrylic front blade (mounted on its base) was substituted for a brass one exact same dimensions. Never seen one myself.

Info.

I've never had luck with an 870 Express, I would avoid them. They all have had problems with the carrier dog slipping causing the lifter to stop halfway and the bolt pile drives the shell into the bridge between the mag tube and barrel. Every 870 I owned did this including 2 brand new ones. I just can't trust them because of it. Older wingmasters seem popular but I've never owned one. Mossbergs have always done excellent for me. Benelli Supernova was a top notch pump. Prices have actually come down recently and I'm having a hard time not buying another one. Btw you can find Nova Tacticals for just over $500 new. I wouldn't pay $500 used. My current setup is a 14" 590A1 modded all to ####. Magpul SGA with a noveske qd cup where magpul should have put it in the first place, magpul oem buttpad adapter with a limbsaver airtech, S&J safety, oem rear ghost ring sight and vang comp front with a Blitzkrieg chevron AR front post, magpul forend with a streamlight protac hl-x on a surefire scout rm45 mount, bfg padded vcas sling and threaded for remchokes. The finish is worn and marked up, it's full of dirt and dust, probably has some oil in crevices somewhere and keeps chugging along in all it's ###y glory.
