Well, now that I've got your attention, I just wanted to share my experience with my first ever Savage rifle! It is a model 25 Light Weight Varminter with the Thumb hole laminate stock. I have changed NOTHING on this firearm, the only modifications I have done are; cut the trigger spring, polished mating surfaces, and sanded a small portion of the stock where it was touching the barrel.

Here is the Rifle, I paid $639 brand new. It is topped with a Bushnell Elite Tactical 6-24X50 that I got NEW for only $540, also wears a cheap UTG bipod I got from Amazon that has been excellent.

It is important to mention that I am not an expert reloader by any means. I have reloaded .243 and .204 using an Arbor Press, Wilson Dies, and a Harrels powder measure. As well as the other odds and ends. I have only tried TWO different loads and have not tuned them at ALL, was simply recommended them from friends shooting other .204 rifles

They are;

39 Grain Speers TNT over 27.5 grains of H4895 and Rem 6.5 primers with bulk bag Remington Brass COL 2.260"

32 Grain Sierra Blitzking over 27.3 grains of H322 and Rem 6.5 primers with bulk bag Remington Brass COL 2.270"

Again I have not tinkered with these loads at all before posting these targets. Shooting is at 100 yards.

FIRST TARGET USING SPEERS TNT LOAD. 5 shots to sight in and then another 5 shots, this was just using a bipod with no back bag, with moderate winds blowing to the right.

SECOND TARGET USING SIERRA BLITZKING LOAD. 3 shots. This was using just a bipod and no rear bag as well. I switched to the Blitz here because the TNT started to wander quite a bit... I soon discovered that my bases had come loose... it was very strange that the TNT caused the scope to shift around but the Blitz evidently did not.

After tightening (loctiting) my bases I fired the following shots using the bipod WITH a rear bag;

THREE BLITZKING (top hole) following by one TNT (bottom hole) to see the POI difference at 100 yards.

This info is a little bit old now, but I'm just getting around to posting it now! I enjoy hunting with the thumb hole stocks so much I purchased one of the Mark II BTVSS that is also pictured here :)

I have done more shooting than is pictured here.. maybe next time I will remember to take pictures or try for the Half Inch Club!

Thanks for reading!

I'm glad the title got the attention! The rifle was purchased from Prairie Gun Traders in Avonlea! I had been in the market for a .204 for quite some time but I could not decide what I wanted. I noticed they had this model in stock (the other stores in town had absolutely no .204 rifles for months) so I drove down. I was skeptical about the stock but obviously I really enjoy them now!

That's some nice shooting minnihill2, what model is that you've got there? I want to say 10 because of the camo but I didn't think they had the fluted barrel.

They're built on a beefed up version of their rimfire actions made for .223 etc... sized cartridges. The barrels are pinned in the same as the rimfire rifles too...no brotherhood of the barrel nut here.

@JRodko - Savage Predator Max1 is what minniehill2 has. 6.5 Creedmore by the looks of the writing on the target. I have the same model but in 22-250, it's another one of those sh** shooting Savage types.. I also have another Savage Predator 10 in .243 that insists on the same type of groupings.

I almost picked up the Model 10 over this but it sold out before I called! And yeah the model 25 I believe are based off of the rimfire? I don't know how much though. I DO know that Rifle Basix makes a trigger for the Mark II rimfire that also fits the Model 25 in a couple calibers so there's obviously some of the same design there!

As per the Scope I absolutely love it...I doubt I could have gotten a better product new for what I paid, considering cabelas has them listed for $899. The glass is clear all the way up to 24 and the side parallax is way better than the ones on the front. Took me a while to get used to the turrets, though. Every time I lay down to shoot I have to make sure they haven't moved.

I just got my first above 22 target rifle to reach out a bit
went for a entry level axis in stainless due to great reviews and the price
and couldnt be happier shoots way better than i do for now

For all the bashing that Savage gets, I have had veryy good luck and excellent accuracy with them... OP I have the same Walking Varminter, but I got it in .22 Hornet and then reamed it to K-Hornet... It is a sweet shooter. I have the same basic configuration in .22 LR, .17 HM2, .17 HMR, .22 K-Hornet and .223... And I am working on one in .22 BR Remington.
