All this talk about assault rifles...

Lets be honest with ourselves, an AR-15 was primarily designed as a weapon, so thats what I call it. I don't like beating around the bush.

That said, theres nothing wrong to me with owning a weapon for self defense and to have a little fun at the range with.

It tics me off when I use the word "weapon" and get corrected by someone saying "it's not a weapon it's a firearm", but in this case with your anti-gun friends you need to do a little media brainwashing of your own.

Paint your AR pink and take a picture of it with some kittens and puppies. Show that to your friends and explain to them that it's your Fuzzy Bunny Paper Puncher. That should do the trick to sway their opinion :D

Be a spokesperson. Take someone who is on the fence shooting sports/gun ownership. Speak respectfully and factually with an anti (they hate real facts).
God knows if I can get my ex-mother in law to realize that a car with full gas-tank is much more dangerous than a loaded AR then you should have at least some chance with people you choose to spend time around ;

I recentyl had a coversation about this with someone I know. She stared by saying there is no need for semi auto's and 30 round mags. I countered with criminals don't obey laws. She then brought up the point that the guy WAS a law abiding citizen until he walked into the theatre armed to the teeth. We then googled america's murder rate and 3/4's of them were commited with firearms. I then asked her how many were with illegal firearms, how many were domestic violence where something else could of been used just as easily and how many were in self defence (hehehe). She's still not sold because of how easy it was to kill 12 people and injure 55 in less than a minute.I also pointed out how these massacares happen in gun free zones and how people who conceal carry are responsible for every bullet they fire. It was a long conversation and we both eventually agreed it has a lot to do with the culture in the USA. Also that you can't plan for the actions of a madman. I might get flamed for this but micheal moore made a release which is suprisingly not so much anti gun but tries to shed light on the parts of american culture that lead to things like this.

It's natural for everyone to be outraged because tragedies like in colerado, and we all want something to be done. Alienating your friends won't help the cause. Critical thinking and discussion might though.

You should point out to her that 50% of the homicides In the US are committed from members of an ethic demographic that makes up only 10% of the population. When those 50% of homicides are removed from the totals and the 10% removed from the population totals the homicide rate of the US and Canada are very close.

If she doesn't like how quickly he killed people remind her that he also made bombs. Tell her about Timothy Mcveigh who killed 168 people in less time then it takes for her to open her mouth and say something inane and he did it with just diesel and fertilizer.
As she mentioned need, you might want to bring up cigarettes and alcohol. To things that as a society we don't need but are directly or indirectly responsible for 75000 deaths a year for alcohol of which 30,000 involve automobiles and 445000 deaths a year for cigarettes of which 45000 deaths are attributed to secondhand smoke. While we are at it fast food and bad diet causing obesity is responsible for 400,000 deaths a year in the US.

Just because she doesn't like guns, she shouldn't get distracted by the senseless act of one crazy. Human beings knowingly kill themselves and others in far greater numbers with other things in society we don't "NEED" but you don't see everyone getting bent out of gear over these items to the same level.

Politicians of a certain type like to make hay when these events occur. They like to distort the impact and overblow the reality to progress the disarmament of civilians. To leave overwhelming force the sole preserve of the government. Who should be feared the loan whack job or the government with no checks and balances by the people.

well to be honest they are my friends because we share interests in other things.. perhaps we don't agree on guns but i cant disown them because of that.. Haha.

Its just frustrating when people don't understand the logic side of things.. The media does a GREAT job at indoctrinating people.

those kind of people are dangerous. very frightening.

The Winchester Model 70, Remington 700, Ruger Model 77,.Howa 1500 etc., are nothing more than updated Mauser Model 98. It too was designed as a weapon of war. Using your logic, shouldn't we call my .308 Featherweight Winchester 70 or .223 Remington Model 700 BDL "weapons"? Or do we continue to identify them as sporting rifles?

Don't buy into the logical fallacies so beloved by the gun banners, - who base many of their arguments on nothing more than emotion and cosmetics. Firearms like the AR-15 are attacked because they "look evil", not that they are somehow inherently more dangerous to the public good than any other modern .223 semi-auto sporting rifle.

Why would you want to hang out with a bunch of girly men who don't like guns, war movies and military stuff? Ditch them before they ditch you.

"If you're going to force me to choose between our friendship and my hobby, I will choose my guns. Why would you try to intimidate me into changing my lifestyle choices? I would not do that to you because you like something which I do not agree with."

Ask if they will follow the Olympics?
Then remind them how it started as a celebration to pagan gods of their military skills.
Does that make them all warmongers?

Invite one at a time to the range.
Firing a nice grouping. Let the see the legalities and practicalities of what you go through to bring it there.
It might get them to question you and start up some good conversations and things for them to think about to convince them you might not be some drug addled gangie-bangie.

The usual suspects are capitalizing on the incident as usual, I doubt it will work this time though. The NRA and GOA are far stronger today then they were back in 1994, the main stream media can only convince/brainwash it's own now. If they could shut the internet down then they could ram through anything again like in the 90's or 80's, also considering the rise of independent media I think there days are numbered. But will see, I think they could get away with restrictions in some states but that is it...

As for your friends that question you owning an AR, if they can't except you enjoying you're hobby in a legal law abiding way, and they are unable to differentiate between a crazy wacko and your right to own a rifle?????????? I say ditch them, you will probably find you have less in common with them on many issues and will probably hit a dead end with them at some point regardless.

Sounds like your friends have convoluted thoughts.

Remington 700 VLS .223 calibre = rifle

AR-15 .223 calibre = rifle

A wacknut could use either one to evil effect. Do we now ban all guns?

I was in the same boat almost a couple years ago -- and also being in Vancouver I can understand the environment. I thought I was the only gunner in my group of friends so I stayed quiet until suddenly one of the other people in my group announced that they had just passed their CFSC and I was like: wow, guess what?

The thing is, your hobby will eventually come out among your friends. Friends talk about what they love and what they are doing. What would be stranger is if you were friends for years and then suddenly they discover you had this 'hidden hobby'. The way I see it: gun owning is LEGAL and a FUN hobby and there is NOTHING wrong with it. And I will tell anyone that.

In fact I would be overjoyed if my friends shared with me my hobby and I have taken over a dozen of my friends (and even one I didn't know that well) shooting at the range. All except for one came away with at least a more positive impression of the pursuit and with way more education on the subject than from what they've been reading in the media. And even two of them have said they would get their PALs.

And surprise, even those who have declined my offer or who I know are definitely anti haven't felt the need to break relations with me, despite what people in this thread suppose. I still go out to concerts, have lunch with, go to parties with, play with their babies, with all those friends. Guns do not consume my life, they just consume a lot of my disposable income! Those people who have suggested you get new friends are goofs. They don't live your life any more than you live theirs.

Keep on being the well-rounded person you are and humanize gun owners to your immediate circle. They will see the hobby as a normal pursuit that people THEY know and love can safely pursue.

Tell them they you didn't know they were racists.....they don't like black guns.

Once puzzled, ask if it would be better painted pink.

the last week or so I have had to de-friend some people on my FB, just don't understand how someone that actually knows me can make the kind of comments, just because I own some AR15s (and this is with the knowledge that I was once a soldier and now a LEO)

weap·on   [wep-uhn]
noun
1. any instrument or device for use in attack or defense in combat, fighting, or war, as a sword, rifle, or cannon.
2. anything used against an opponent, adversary, or victim
3. Zoology . any part or organ serving for attack or defense, as claws, horns, teeth, or stings.

Unless you are planning on harming someone with your firearm its NOT a weapon. Do you say 'honey can u pass me the butter weapon please?' I highly doubt it. A knife is a knife, a gun is a gun. A weapon is something used with intent to harm/kill.

If you have shot someone with your gun please by all means call it a weapon.

The fundamental issue is that an AR15 is a sporting rifle - it is NOT an ASSAULT rifle. The M16, however, is.

Select fire = assault rifle.

Semi-auto = sporting rifle.

I just don't understand why this is so hard to hoist in?!?!
