Started this build last winter,
winchester model 70 classic stainless action
Stainless Benchmark 358 barrel 1-12 twist
Warne qd rings

After a lot of searching and headaches, Double gun was kind enough to help finish my rifle off for me. Being a very talented machinist he was able to build me a front sight and drill & tap my rear scope base for a flip up style peep sight. I am extremely impressed how clean this turned out. A very nice sporting rifle and capable large game caliber ready for some critters.
It shoots 200gr ttsx into clover leafs.
250gr speer hotcores have shown alot of promise but unfortunately they don't shoot to the same point of impact as the ttsx.

Now to figure out a zero for my back up irons.

Awesome! Nice build. That will be a very versatile hunting setup.

PM me if you want a great pistol bullet plinking load recipe.

Buckbrush doesn't have his rifle back yet, so here are some pictures (sorry I'm no photographer):

I've never been a m70 guy, but playing with this rifle a bit I've gained much more respect for the m70's. Nice rifle, I hope to see some kills posted with it.

Man that's nice. Congrats guys.
I was shooting a peep sight like that on the weekend. Its crazy how accurate they are!

Iam just borrowing DGs front sight insert for the time being. I'm going to order one asap. For general hunting close and far low light to mid day sun, what is the best bead to get. There is fiber optic, brass, and white or ivory colored. What do you open sight guys prefer?

On my iron sighted lever actions, I've always preferred either bright brass bead or (my favourite) a post front with a vertical white strip and square top. I find the latter to give me a sight picture that's most comfortable/easy to acquire.

Nice rifle!

order the tallest (0.394" ?) sourdough brass faced insert. Set the redfield peep to middle elevation and file down the front to your POI, now you will know what height bead to order later if you decide to change

The brass face works almost everywhere and the flat top is more precise than any bead.

Nice work double gun!

This is an awesome thread Buckbrushoutdoors, Thank-you and especially for the great pictures.
You have an envious piece of work there.
I've carried the Whelen since the 1960s when it was a wildcat, but my old rifle is nowhere near as nice as yours.
My load work mirrors yours since I had a new barrel done a few years ago and decided to look for different load combinations as my old favourite the 275 Hornady was discontinued about the time that the old Buhmiller barrel gave up the ghost.
Hopefully, I can post pictures of mine..

Perfect, Thanks. I was thinking of getting few different sights and trying them out to see what my eyes prefer.

I found a far far cheaper and FAR less elegant solution for an 'all weather' 35 Whelan..... a Remington 7600.... the only thing I can't get at to dry if I am caught in a downpour is the 2.5 sq inches in front of the butt stock. And it is surprisingly accurate...AND consistent.
(VERY envious of your rifle though!!)
