Trying to remove the flash hider on my polytech m14, but can't seem to find the correct allen key to undo the set screw that holds the castle nut...
All my keys are either too small or too big...

Anyone knows the exact size? I don't want to buy yet another complete set of keys...

Thanks!

Tried a 2mm, doesn't go in.
And a brand new 1.5mm doesn't catch and spins even though the set screw doesn't look rounded.

1/16 doesn't go in either...

WTF? Mastercrap tools or notorious chicom craftmanship? Maybe also a bit of bubba skills, or a mix of all 3...

I was at a clinic with callipers and measured a bunch of Allen keys as I've had this problem.
Some 1/16 worked in mine, some didn't
However they were all the exact same size. If the ends are even slightly ground then I had no luck.
Pita screw.
Again this is for my Norc - don't know if poly is different.

IT all depends on which high school shop class put your Norinco together.

I'm kinda over the Norc allen key issue since I've been fighting and being surprised for over the past 10 years. As soon as I get/buy any Norc, the first thing I replace is the flash suppressor with an M1A unit like this:

You can still use your existing Norc metric castle nut with this US pattern flash suppressor unit. And here's the advantage... 1/16" allen key ALWAYS forever.... no ifs ands, or buts! I'm tired of goofy surprises after many years of working on real American M14 rifles (now 12.5 status) and M1 Garands. With the US versions of these rifles, all the dimensions have no surprises!

At my M14 Clinics, I encourage everyone to bring every allen key set they have. All of you can guess WHY! :)

Anyways, THAT is part of your learning journey!

Cheers,
Barney

Try a T6 or T7 Torx bit. You might have to Lightly tap it in.

You were right on the money, soaked the set screw in PB for a couple of days and it came off using a T7 torx bit.
I'm now in the process of grinding a set of vise-grips to make my own castle pliers, and got a SA muzzle brake coming my way, courtesy of the EE.
That M14 game is really fun!
Thank you all for chiming in!

I learned a long time ago that some tools are consumables. For that reason I have never flinched at dressing a screwdriver or softening an edge on an Allen key with a file. Heck, it might just be the one application for that tool when a standard one gets used and worn down from all the other uses.

Allen keys to me are very disposable. They are plentiful and cheap. I've modified many to do what I need.

Barney replaced mine with a USGI one during a build at his place.
