Alliant 2400 and the 45 Colt

I haven't loaded 45 colt in a while but recently had to load some for a friends New Vaquero. I found some data and loaded up 16 gr of 2400 and some 250 gr LRNFP's. His gun loved it and I was very impressed however that data was marked Ruger, TC and Freedom Arms only. Seeing as this is very close to the 17.5 gr of 2400 with a 240 gr that I use in the 44 mag, I can't help but wonder if it would be harmful to shoot this load from an N frame S&W or similar....... Anyone use 2400 to load for their 45 Colt?

DO NOT USE THAT DATA. That is for old 3 screw blackhawk . I use 7.5 win 231 for my new vaquero.If your buddy likes his gun and his face take those loads apart.

I'm not familiar with that load but, the NEW Vaquero should be limited to P-series Colt's pressures and velocities of not much over 1000fps with the 250 gr Keith. Cowboy action loads using Trail boss are recommended and are barely 800fps. usually, with the same keith bullet.

He just corrected me, this is a Vaquero, NOT a New Vaquero. I found this on Chuck Hawks site...

The following quote is from the section of the Speer Reloading Manual No. 13 devoted to high pressure .45 Colt loads, and reinforces this point.

"IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE. These loads are intended for use only in Ruger Blackhawk and Vaquero revolvers, and the Thompson/Center Contender. They are not to be used in any other make or model of firearm!"
