Almost got shot

That's the new one... why?

It should be safer than the old one.

You can see the old one easier!!!
especially when the gelled hair bursts into flames. ;)
I was hunting on private land this year and it was nice, but you had to watch because we encountered people who knew they were not allowed to hunt there but ignored the signs anyway.

You said you found some brass. How far?
Someone with a little combat experience could step in and tell you that not hearing the shot is not all that abnormal.
There's a reason they teach you to shoot only once from a position.

The brass was only 50 yards from where I was. I assumed the shooter was in the same windbreak as me but at the end of the next field in the direction of the brass. Later on we found a fresh gut pile in that area.

I'm sure I could have gotten you, especially wearing the blaze.;)

I'd have been pissed too.

Your father in law sounds like all fathers in law...a tool.

I am also curious as to where you found the brass... what other sign there was... vehicles etc.
And eltorro is right.. the lack of a gun shot is not indicative of anything at all.. just the fact that you heard a bullet strike close can shock you enough to not hear anything else.

By your story I'm guessing it was a WARNING shot. The other hunter probably was pissed you were in the same field. His finger prints should be on the brass you found !!!!

I'd shoot back, and see how he likes it.

Brambles

Brass was 50 yds away and you didn't hear a shot? Maybe it was shot the day before or an hour before. Do you really think somebody 50 yds away is going to shoot a warning shot. If I was going to do that (not that I would) I would make sure I was out of range.

Unless your totally deaf, You are going to hear a 7mm mag in blizzard at 50 yards. probably a stray shot from a long ways off. I'd be super pissed.

Camper

I don't think the shooter was shooting from where I found the brass. I think they had moved further down the windbreak. I assume that I didn't hear the shot because I heard the impact of the bullet first or at the same time. Things got pretty hectic at that point and I could easily have missed the report.

Anyhow. There were no other vehicles in the area and no other houses or likely hunting areas. I think the person was poaching and moved out on the right of way.

I agree, if a 7mm goes off 50 yards from you, you hear it, no matter what going on, as a matter of fact, you even feel it. I agree, it was most probably a stray from a mile or more away, and these things happen, its one of the risks we as hunters have to take. All be it, it shouldn't happen, but it does. The best backdrop in the world, can very easily hold a rock that could throw a bullet anywhere, even a hell of a long ways away.

I almost got shot at at my range a few weeks ago, would thank my lucky stars it didn;t hit me. You are never going to know what really happenned, could have been a stry form a long way, if you heard it that measn it was going below the spead of sound which is about 1000 fps, it shot form a magnum that could be over 1000 yards away. if you were on a high spot it could have come form anywhere, I also have met rude hunters, i prefer to now think another hunter shot at me.

Here on Vancouver Island During the Fall when we wild Mushroom pick in our neck of the woods we stay in No hunt zones, but every so often some "jackalope" sends a round through the woods hunting something anyway.

So we carry those loud as heck self pumping boat horns from Cambodian Tire.
3 short blast gives them the idea, and they scamper off right quick...esp' since our local Loggers, and timber cruisers tend to not be so diplomatic and formal when they catch people who take pot shots at them.

With so many village idiots around these days I'm starting to think that a Kevlar tac vest with ballistic plates might not be a bad idea for the field or even the range. :D

Do you ever hear the shot you take at game? I sure as hell don't
At the range, my gun booms and kicks like a horse, every time I make a kill shot, I hear and feel nothing..........except a month ago when I got scope kissed and broke a piece of bone on the edge of my nose! I heard the boom, felt the recoil saw stars and smoke. My doctor laughed at me because I missed the deer and broke my nose, I had a shiner for 2 weeks.

You describe it as a "ffffffft' sound. That is exactly how I would describe a bullet when it is SUBsonic, less than ~~1100 fps. If it SUPERsonic, it will sound like a hand clap right next to your ear.

I have an old CF book that talks about the "Crack, Thump" technique. First you hear the supersonic crack, then the thump of the gun firing. As soon as you hear the crack, start counting as you wait for the thump. This way, you can judge both direction and distance of the shooter. I forget the actual distance per second.

On topic...anyone catch some of the frontline Video footage in the A-stan taken by the Friendly A-stan troops? They have lots of interesting sounds.

Sort of like a crack, and a low buzzing wizing past and the thump after, and that was from a camera that was hit by an incoming AK round, and saved the camera mans life. Yup you don't want to hear that in real life.
