Alpharms 15SA breaking in range report

I got my 15SA last year and put around 40 rounds through it. Then I took it apart to strip it, clean it and lube with RedNTacky #2 and only got it back together this month.

I took it to the range yesterday mainly to check it's functioning ie. did I put it back together right?, sight in the red dot and the front BUIS as I inverted the hand guard and the front BUIS was sitting higher than before.

I also wanted to shoot a bunch of rounds through it to try to break it in as the previous 40 rounds had seen failure to feed (shells not catching on the advancing bolt), shells hanging up on the extractor cutout and stove pipe FTE of hulls.

I got it sighted in with slugs so that the red dot shoots to POA at 20 yards. I have the BUIS front sight cranked down as far as it will go and it is still higher than the red dot so I may have to grind the post down.

I then ran 2 boxes (50 rounds from the great $99 for 175 rounds plus the ammo can sale) of Federal 2.75" OO buck through it with zero failures. It always ran pretty well with this full house load. With the modified choke the 9 pellets grouped 7" at 20 yards, tighter than I expected. It was very pleasant recoil wise to shoot.

I found the fore grip helped to manage recoil and stay on target. I'm not usually a fan of fore grips on my black rifles unless there are so many accessories that I can't grip properly (ie. run out of room) but I figured that maybe the foregrip would allow me to give the SG a firmer hold and assist its functioning.

The action was getting noticeably smoother and easier to cycle by hand so the break in was helping.

I then ran a bunch of cheap Challenger low brass 2.75" 7.5 birdshot. These are the smooth hull shells.

I shot 75 rounds. I had 6 isolated failures. 4 where the bolt didn't latch, I just tapped the bolt handle (painless due to Bugouts bolt handle cover) forward with my weak hand and it was GTG. I think they are hanging on the extractor notch as it is very sharp on the face towards the oncoming shells. I am tempted to put a polishing wheel to it with my Dremel but will wait till I have finished breaking it in.

I had one failure of the bolt to catch the rim of the first shell using the release. That may have been me not slapping the base of the mag hard enough.

I had one failure to extract the hull stove pipe.

Most of the failures were in the first 5 mags of the birdshot and it ran better and better till the end. I have 5 mags and did not notice the failures happening with just one of the mags. I have clipped the mag springs as per Wolverine's advice and they are easy to load now.

Overall I am encouraged by the improvement. it bears out what some of the other owners have reported regarding it needing a break in.

I will do another session with around 200 birdshot and hopefully it will be all broken in and running like a sewing machine.

I returned my first shotgun as it would not run correctly even after the all mods were done. Wolverine sent out a newer version but still owe me some mags . I am still having some issues but will wait for it to break in . I tried mounting the hand guard upside down as well and found it mounts the front sights too high as has a thicker base for the sight.
My attachment for my bolt that I got from Bugout lasted half aday :(
geologist ...Some of the mags need the feed lips opened up a bit ..maybe try measuring the faulty mags lips .

New gas system

I have a newer version of the handle, longer and has 4 screws instead of 2. It can also be glued together for additional strength. If you are going to the Galt 2 gun let me know and I'll bring a handful for you. Just be aware, replacements get printed in the color of my choice...and I have a lot of pink plastic.

How does yours feed birdshot?

I have the four screw Bugout bolt handle cover and it is the cats meow but I did have to use a Sharpie to make it black.........................

I have only tried birdshot ...Challenger 7.5 Handicap, Winchester and Federal . The Challenger ammo worked the best but it is still having issues.
The empty shell when ejected was caught by the bolt 4-5 times out of 35 rounds on Sat.

Based on my experience, mine cycles 2.75" Federal full house OO buck without a hitch (I keep the mags stored in my locked ammo locker loaded with Federal buck). I think that the break in is speeded up by shooting heavy loads first and then going to birdshot after the internals are smoothed up.

YMMV.

I went back and fired another 75 rounds of 2.75" Score 71/2s. They fed and cycled badly. I ran it wet to try to make it better but there were many failure to feeds like the one below.

Almost all can be cleared by pulling the bolt back a centimetre and then hitting the bolt handle forward.

There were no failures to extract ie. if you can get the shell into the chamber the hull is coming out.........

The shell is hanging up on the extractor cutout to the degree that the front edge of the shell is getting cut and bulging a bit. I think that it is this small cut bulge that I am hammering into the breach by hitting the bolt handle.

I don't think that more shooting will correct this problem, not even high brass full house buckshot.

In the Wolverine Tips thread they describe a burr on the extractor cut out so I am about to tear it down and if necessary file it if there is an obvious burr.

If the feeding does not improve then the 15SA will be a range queen (and not a very fun one with birdshot) as my go to guns have reliability as their NUMBER 1 criteria.

I tried the 15SA again after gently filing the extractor cut out.

The soft grey Score 7.5 birdshot were still failing to feed about 1 in 5 but the cuts to the shell rim seemed less pronounced.

I then tried the Challenger Handicap 7.5 birdshot in the smooth blue hulls. These fed perfectly but were giving me failure to extracts around 1 in 8. The spent hull was getting trapped on top of the incoming shell.

I think that I have found a light birdshot load that functions 100%. Federal Field & Range 7.5 birdshot functioned perfectly. I fired 50 rounds without any failures.

I checked the zero of the red dot with Score 1 ounce slugs at 15 yards. The TRS25 (target on left) is holding zero just fine.

The BUIS however are printing 6" low as the front sight is too high (the rail is higher as I have reversed the forearm) despite the front sight post being screwed down as far as they will go. I will file down the post.

I will plug one of my mags to 2 rounds and go hare hunting this month.

Ive got one picked it up a week or so ago.. i found after i clipped a coil off the mag spring mine has preformed a lot better. Hey BUGOUT what is this thing you have made can I get a pic of it? I have one thing I am looking for to make this a little better for me its a larger cocking handle . I have put maybe 5 rds down range and tried one round of skeet with it . I need more practice with this and shooting skeet

I just figured out (daaahhhh) that I don't need to grind down the front post.

If I forgo using the rear BUIS (anyone need a Magpul rear BUIS - barely used?) and just use the raised front BUIS post and the TRS25 as a sort of big ghost ring sight it'll shoot to POA.

I make a 3D printed cover for the charging handle to make it bigger.

After reading some of the other Turkish AR threads I am going to try swapping the modified choke for the tighter full choke and see if the birdshot feeding improves on the Challenger shells. The Federal birdshot seems to function just fine even with the modified choke.

I assume that I won't have any issues with the full choke and forster style slugs?

Potential accuracy issues.
