I should be getting my Steven's 200 in .300 win mag this week. This will be a utility rifle. I mean, I have rifles for specific things. I've got a long range prairie rifle. A rifle just for antelope. A rifle for the thick stuff, and a general do all, iron sighted back-up rifle. This rifle will be a use on anything anywere rifle. I will carry this rifle when camping and fishing in the mountains. It could be used in the tree's or on the prairies. I will use it when it's crappy outside too. My scope choice's are many. My budget will allow a max of $300. I'm thinking a Weaver V1-3, or a K-4 or K-6. A leupold rifleman or VX-1, 2-7 or 3-9. Or a Bushnell elite 3200 3-9. Give me some of your opinions please.

if you are willing to up your max by $100.00 or so I would recommend 2.5 X 10 in the elite 4200 , it has good clear lenses and at low power a wide field of view and if you need higher well you have up to 10

another option in the 2.5 to 10 is the Simmons Aetec Master series

a great scope that would meet your price range, just as good as Bushnell but in the $250.00 range.

In my opinion the problem with magnum rifles is the recoil so you need a scope with lots of eye relief, unfortunatly no low budget scopes offer good 3"+ eye relief even Bushnell ( 3" at low mag. and less then 2.5 a higher mag.)

for good eye relief and extra clear vision Nicon Monarch serie but $$$$$

I would pick a Leupold VX1 2X7 if cost was an issue. 2X would be good for your "thick stuff" scenario and 7X is plenty of magnification for most big game hunting. I've used a straight 6X for the majority of my prairie deer / antelope hunting and never felt like I needed more scope. Another bonus is that the Leupolds are serviced in Alberta in the unlikely event that something goes wrong.

A bushnell 10X fixed, mildot, with turet rings might fit your mid to long range needs

Just a thought

Ummmm....yeah. Got to agree with Davey on that one.

If you can find one (recently disontinued) the Bushnell Trophy 1.75-5 EER (extended eye relief...4.5") is a great scope. I took to puting these on my slug guns. Very nice scopes, esp. for the $. And if they'll stand up to my hot 12 ga slug loads, they'll definitely be fine on your 300.

I would also look at the Burris line. I have a 3-9x40 FFII on my .30-06 and I just ordered a 4.5-14x42 for my .243. They are great scopes, have a forever warranty and the ballistic plex is a real nice feature too. You can get them on ebay for a great deal as well.

For the money - the mueller tac 2 is the most scope you can buy in that price range.

Seeing as it's a 'gp' gun, i'd even suggest the 2-7 multishot, which i believe is around 200 bucks. Excellent optics for the money, certainly better than a rifleman. It's a little heavier than most 2-7's, but it has the option of an illuminated center dot which is nice, and the reticle style is great for a wide range of encounters.

The Elite 3200 is the way to go, for sure. My brother in law has one in 3-9 on his .300 Win. Mag. I tried it this last weekend on the range. Very good value, and perfectly matched to the Stevens rifle.

I bought a rifleman 4-12 a year and a half ago and it has been just fine.Eye relief is great and I have had no trouble with the friction adjustments.Approximately 600 rounds and I have not had to change the settings. Not As nice as my vx-2 on my 375 but is works fine for what I wanted it for.A stevens 25-06.
