A friend from work wants to reload some round nosed bullets for bear hunting.
He doesn't know what bullet and powder to buy. He has never reloaded for his .270 only for his .338
the iron is a Thompson Center Encore Prohunter with a 26" or 28" barrel. Help please!
 
You might have a hard time finding round nose 150 gr bullets, Hornady was the last major manufacturer to offer one, and they have dropped it. If you check gunshows you might be able to find some. The Nosler 160 gr Partition is a semi spitzer, and would work nicely. Likewise the 150 gr Partion, the Hornady Spire Point, and Speer Grand Slam would all be equally up to the task of taking down a black bear.

As for powders, I've had good luck with IMR 4350 and H4831 with 150gr bullets in the 270 Win. If it absolutley has to be a round nose bullet the Federal and Remington factory loads both have RN bullets.
 
Speer used to make a 170 grain RN bullet for the 270, but I believe it is out of production. This bullet penetrates well. My present choice would be the 160 Semi-Spitzer Partition. Eagleye.
 
I Didnt' know about the 150 gr. Hornady RN being unobtainum....Im toying with the idea of ordering some of the 165 gr. Matrix bonded bullets....they will shoot in in a standard 10" twist.....just might seat a little deep in a DM rifle .

54gr of h4831 under my NosPart160's rattled my teeth. 57gr would work well to clear my sinuses

in case you try the above load, work up from under... Hodgdon lists 54gr of H4831 as Max load, at 50,500cup

Shot oodles of deer,antelope,bear and moose with a 130gr Hornady and 57gr of IMR 4831.................add a black bear last week................Harold

Yeah, it's a stout load! Which Hodgdon Manual are you referring to? My Hodgdon Data Manual Twenty-Fifth Edition lists 57 grs H4831 as a Max load at 50,800 CUP with a 160 gr. bullet.
 
I have used a load of IMR 4350 with 160gr Patitions with good success. (Can't remember the exact charge at the moment, I'll check and update when I get home.) Complete passthrough on a blackie @ approx 75yds, going through the off side shoulder. They group just about 1 1/8" @ 100yds from my 22" bbl Savage 110. They may do even better, but as this is to be a load for closer ranges I didn't do any further tweaking.

The max load you list seems a little low, the manual i have lists 58 grains of 4831 as the max load with a velocity of approx 2935 fps
