Ok now that seeding is done i think its a good time to treat myself to a nice 22. I want to spend around 800 if possible. Prefer stainless steel because most likely be staying in my truck over winter. Also a recomedation of a scope would be cool. Will be using for small game like gophers and pigeons.
thx

Be happy and get yourself a Marlin Stainless 795 Semi Auto $260. if you can find one. Best little .22 for the money. Must have almost 500 gophers on mine this year. Got a Tasco World Class Mil Dot 3x9x40 on it and it is deadly and reliable. Or you could spend more on a 1022 that isn't as accurate.

That is a hefty budget for a 22 unless you are looking for a premium gun. The Ruger 77/22 would be a good choice; I hade one in stainless 17 hmr and it was a nice rifle. Not sure the price on them now,but a used one would work too.

As for a scope, I would spend some money. I used to buy the $100 scopesand they are all gone now. I have always hAd good luck with the Bushnell Elites; they are a great cost to quality ratio. I have a 3200 2-7x32 on my 10/22 for years and it has never caused me problems (came off my muzzleloader).

Browning Buckmark rifle would be my vote.

I don't think there's anything that will shame a $500-600 stainless Savage at the $800 price point. The Ruger 77/22 is probably $800 used now, that's what I'd be looking for, if a SS Savage wasn't acceptable.

I can't believe how many people are suggesting an annie for a truck gun for gopher hunting. I mean, cumon... really???

If it's for the odd gopher here and there get yourself something like a savage mark ii in stainless with a polymer stock on it, that will be truck-proof and won't rust etc.. throw a simply little 4x scope on there and load it up with CCI quiet-22 segmented hollow points.

If you really wanna take on a gopher army, then get a ruger 10/22 SS with a polymer stock, a 110 rd drum magazine and get the dlask charging handle kit with the spring for subsonic ammo in it, throw a semi decent red dot scope on there and load it up with CCI quiet 22 segmented hollow points.

You can even go for the takedown version with the little waterproof backpack to keep it in, avoids the rough and tumble of the back of the truck

With the cost of rimfire ammo, you will waste more in the dirt than hitting the gophers with a 10/22.... in fact that gun is well named... for every 22 shots, you will hit 10 gophers.

With an Annie, if you miss, it is you not the gun.

I have owned a few 10/22's over the years, and they are an excercise in frustration. If I pull the trigger, the gopher should go down.

10/22's are fun for wasting ammo and making noise... and spending too much $$$ on to make them accurate.

I just got myself a DAR 22 with 12.5 inch, best money ever spend on ruger 10/22 platform. Oh ! Yeah, you will get any gophers in sight.

I have a go to Savage MKII FVSR, not stainless but thick bluing job on them. I have that and a Nikon prostaff rimfire 4-16x40 bdc. Its a great set up for not much money.
If I was going to go for another set up, I would start with a CZ.

Let's make the math easy and say 10 gophers for every 20 shots.

So 1 gopher for every 2 shots.

If you buy a caseload, you're paying about $0.08 per shot.

Difference in the price of the guns? Let's call it $560 (that's a low estimate) after tax etc...

And you are "wasting" $0.08 per gopher

$560/$0.08 = 7000

So, the break-even point is 7000 gophers.

ANd that's forgetting the fact that the annie isn't gonna survive being tossed into the back of the truck and getting wet and dirty all the time.

That's a heck of a lot of gophers!!

Yesir it is :) I am using a CZ452 and a Walther KKM UIT Special to slap my gophers down.
