Alot of you have heard me talk about the younger fellow I've kind of taken under my wing. I've had him out hunting, both birds and gophers and I sent him for his hunting safety test. Well now I had him take his firearms safety test and he passed with flying colours. So now he's wanting a .22 to call his own.

He want's a bolt action, that was his only demand. He want's nothing to do with semi's, and isn't really interested in my favorites, levers, at least not at this stage. :)()

I took him into WSS and he tried on a few different rifles, CZ's, Savages and such. But I think I convinced him he should get himself a singleshot. He has no problem limiting himself to one shot, and I think he enjoys the added challenge. Now he has set himself a price limit at $300, and would prefer a rifle both with sights, and a dovetail to mount a scope if he wants.

The first thing that comes to my mind is a Savage MK I, but there's a catch. He's not a big guy. In fact, he's maybe 5'6" or so, and doesn't have alot of reach. My rifles are too long for him to shoot comfortably, though he has managed. Weight is also an issue. He can carry it, but he can't really hold it in a firing position for long.

I should mention the scope thing isn't big. I've taught him to shoot with both, and for me, I would prefer him to get proficiant with iron sights before getting too used to optics. He too agree's he wants more practice with open sights, and I've started talking to him about peeps. Naturally, there are many Cooey's out there, but there's alot more too, and it's always fun to discuss other guns. So given that criteria, what rifle should I suggest he buys himself that 20 years from now he will still treasure just like the day he got it. Condition doesn't much matter, as I like restoring old guns and told him we could fix one up. Have at her, but please keep it in his criteria. No 10/22, 597, tactical crap etc. Thanks.

How about a Savage Mk II GY? I'm 5'8" and I found the GLY that I had a little short for me...but it may suit him well. It shot very well, and had the Accutrigger.

Why not a Cooey 60 c/w scope mount and scope. The benefits are, it holds more than one shell at a time, it is a bolt action self cocking, the mount can be taken off and the gun used open sighted but if long range shooting is wanted, four screws and it is back on again. Cheap to buy and actually is very collectible, being already about 50-60 years old. thus he can save a few dollars for his next rifle.

Another vote for the Cooey 60 - cool and clasically Canadian!

Just a quick question; are you willing to drill & tap? I know that you were looking to refinish if need be, and there are some awesome - though older & most probably used - Remington bolties out there (I like the 512, personally).

first rifle

Having grown up with single shots I think he is going the right way. Many of us on this site will agree learning with a single shot has made us better shots.

I would recommend finding a Anchutz single shot, they are hard to beat for accuracy and most are groved for a scope.

Good luck

I started with a Cooey and liked it too, so I vote Cooey. I think it was a Cooey 600, it has a ~12 round tube mag and dove tail already on it.

1st rifle

best bet is to take him to a couple of gun shows , get the best value for his dollar and probably good selection ,Cooey is a good starter rifle , Lakefeild is another , both are priced anywhere from $60 to $120 used and in good condition , I would say that getting a repeater is probably a good choice as he may get tried of a single shot quickly . another rifle worth finding and owning is one of the older Mossberg's ( there very accurate ) and underestimated , well made ....LOL....Joe

If he can find a used Walther KKM (single shot) he'll be in business. With a plain stock they can be bought for $400 if you can find one. Best bang for the buck, excellent shooters, and a rifle that he'll be proud to own.

I know they're tough to find but they are out there. The trick is finding one with a mediocre stock rather than a custom or with fancy wood.

There's an Anschutz Match 64 in the EE right now with peep sights for 580. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=283273

Not sure how well that does for him. Eps also has several Cricket rifles that are single shot .22s. The only issue might be that their LOP is too short. 5 foot 6 isn't that much shorter than average.

If you want to go the old route, how about a nearly century-old Anschutz?

I've got a Savage Mk.II BV. I know it's not single shot, but it's a bolt gun. It's a tack driver and I'd sooner sell my dog than that little rifle.

It'll get passed on to my son in time so I reckon it's probably in the "keeper" category you're looking for.

if I would be looking for a youth starter gun... i'd give some serious thought to the Husqvarna 22 Cal. Single Shot Youth sold by Tradeex

For $120, it is well within his budget (and I wouldn't worry about trimming the stock to fit him)

just my 2 cents worth :)
