alternative cartridge for deer under 250m

243, or 7x57 if you reload, would be my votes. Substitute with 7mm-08 if you don't reload. You can also use 7.62x39 for shorter ranges.

Someone already suggested 6.5mm Creedmoor, so I say go lever gat and get a .357Magnum or .44Magnum lever gun. Granted by this point 250 yards is way past its effective range, but if you're hunting in areas I'm suspecting you are, then at least .44Magnum should still be within your comfort zone.

With a minimum caliber requirement of .270, I'd recommend either the 270 or 7mm-08. The latter has less recoil, but former likely has more availability. I started hunting with the 270 at 13 or so, and was likely 100 pounds (given that I graduated at just over 130), so the recoil shouldn't be too much for you folks. I recently nearly picked up a 7mm-08 for me and my wife to use for deer, but ended up with the 6.5 Grendel. Pity you can't qualify for it, that would for the bill perfectly.

Is she going to be hunting Samber ?
Or just fallow and reds, if only the later two, I would forget about the bigger cal, and get a nice ladies rifle, micro browning, model 7 or similar, in a short action 6.5 or 7mm.
Managed recoil loads, are aviable in many common Calibres, are these an option in Ozzie,
What deer types are you typical hunting. I know of Samber, reds and fallow, in Ozzie, what others, are available in your area?

I may be wrong but the lever gun may not be an option in Australia

So I've toyed with the 7.62x39mm in a Bolt rifle for the past few years, i was impressed with it for the smaller deer species, an careful with it on the larger deer species- particularly the Female sized animals. it worked fine with the 150gr reloads at 2200fps.

My partner is shopping for a rifle, one that we can have fit her well from the get go firstly, then worry about the calibre- for our Regs we need to be over .270 calibre for the big deer species.... an only .243 calibre for the smallers -- (there may or may not be a minimum weight projectile reg in there somewhere - that was 130gr /270)

Wanting shorter barrelled rifle with lower recoil, we had originally set up for the .308, an i downloaded it to 2200fps an then we are up on 2400fps now with 150gr - so essentially between a 7.62x39 and 30-30...

So here we are thinking about the Ruger Ranch gen 2 rifle, an it is available in .350 legend and 300 blk .... and the 7.62x39!
with what both seem to be doing around the same velocity- being suitable for 200meters on Deer, i just wonder if its a path we should investigate more?

she will seldom ever shoot over 250 meters !
targetting meat deer, mostly hinds say-
mostly ambush style hunting but also still hunting, so going for shorter barrel for field use, less weight over the front etc

im wondering if we are putting too much thought into the 308- when these other ones could fit the purpose quite well? what do you say about it?
I agree with everyone above, you're overthinking this. If you need to be 270+, then I'd say 7-08, 7x57 (if you can find one you like), 270win or 308 with 150s. That 7.62x39 would be okay - I know some guys that use their CZ 7.62x39 for deer, but that's in Ontario Canada where a shot over 100m is pretty rare. At 250yds I'd rather have something else. It's too bad you can't use a 6.5x55 - that would be ideal.

For my money, it'd be a 7mm-08.

Happy hunting.

223 77TMK
22 Creed 88 ELDM / 77 LRX
6.5 creed 130 TMK
7mm-08 139/145 LRX or 160 TMK loaded at 2.935in

There you go. Pick one. Personally I’m going with the 223 with 77 TMK if it’s under 200 yards.

Having followed your posts, I would take a good hard look at what your supply situation is like... Ammo, bullets, powder, etc. Since you reload, most 270 plus cartridges can be made functionally identical.

You won't get any love of any of the new straight wall cartridges from Canada, as you would from the US. No requirements here to shoot them like in the US, so they have taken like wild fire over there. Not here.

I now shoot the 450BM, but I'm after primarily moose and elk with it, but the 350 or even the 400 legend in a small single shot CVA scout would be nice and ideal for deer. Or in the gen II ranch.

1-308,2-7/08,3-7x57. Not sure if 7mm is legal for larger game. If your 308 fits try a 165 and never look back. Cup and core for deer and partition & similar for bigger.
yeah i think its going to be a 308 firstly , an if anything a 7-08 - just for ease of components down here,...and the price.
once you get over 308 the prices increase a fair bit.

the 7mm 08 is legal.. anything just over a .270 projectile and technically 130gr, hence ive had to load 150gr speer i nthe 7.62x39 to be "legal", in the past.
i would say the limit is 200m with the 7.62 class- but 300 do able with the 308/708 etc not so with the straight wallers as easily.
