Just got a Sako 85 and I've read bits and pieces about mounting options on this on the forum but haven't found anything absolutely difinitive in terms of model numbers, ring height, etc. I don't want to have to use the Optilocks.

I've read that Leupold and Talley has one piece rings that can mount directly to the Sako 85. I've also heard a little bit about the Sako ringmounts being able to do that, too. Is this true for the Talley Lightweights and the Sako Ringmounts? I have the Talleys on my A7 and like them.

If one of these alternatives is possibe, which one would I need in terms of height? I imagine they might differ for each of the brands. Will I need low or medium if I want my Leupold VX 3 3.5 −10X40 scope to just clear the barrel with Butler Creek scope covers on it?

Any help in this regard would be really appreciated!

I would recommend using Leupold "Sako" style rings in Medium height.
They can be bought new for around $90 retail.
If you check through the EE, you will have no problem finding a set for around $60.
I believe WSS recently had them on sale.

What caliber sako 85 did u get. Also I like the leupold 1 piece mounts. Medium for the 40mm scope. Also stay about from the butler creek flip open caps. If ur using a leupold scope put the leupold alumina flip open lens. The best around.

If you want to stay away from Optilocks then Leupold and Burris both have bases and/or rings that would work for you. Leupold has QR ring and bases, as well as ringmounts. Burris has rings, bases, as well as a rail that fit onto the dovetail that is pic/weaver/mil compatible. As far as I'm aware Talley does not make a ring that mounts directly to the dovetail without one of their bases. The height that you would need would be dependent on whether or not you wanted to go with ring/base or a ringmount. Once you've narrowed your options down myself or one of the other gun nutz on here would be able to steer you in the right direction. And I should add that if you're in need of some we could look at bringing in any mounting option from the manufacturers I mentioned previously. Hope that helps!

I'm about to scope a small Sako 85 action and I did some research on "the net"

I chose a ringmount setup. Go Sako or Leupold. They are the cleanest, nicest option imo.

Also choose a lower height that you are used to. I think the low height can fit a 44 objective diameter.

I bought a 7mm08 (so its a short action). Mush (just a post or two above) mentioned that the Leupold Low Ringmounts would clear a 44mm objective so I guess that would be the one to go with especially if I was going to add scope covers to it. I guess they don't make an Extra Low.

If I was going to go with the Sako Ringmounts I'd probably have to go with the 'Low' ones, as well, since I believe that's the lowest one they make. I just don't want a mounted scope that is higher above the barrel than it needs to be.

Thanks, everybody, for the advice and information you've given so far!

Cheers~

Just be carefull , I might have express myself poorly.

By Sako's naming scheme , the LOW ringmount are usually taller than other brands. I mean , that LOW Sako rings correspond to Med in other brands.

So the Sako LOW will clear 44 mm obj. Don't know about the Leupy.

S&k contuored rings will get your scope very close to your barrel, are very easy to mount and are very strong. Plus they look damn nice on a sako190.jpg
