Am I dialing in MOA right?

Took my browning .300 wsm shooting 180 winchesters out today to take a crack at a target out at 1000 yards. I put 2 shots through a chrono and got a velocity of 3060 fps averaged. I went to the target and took atmosphere readings and wind readings using my weathermate from speedtech, then went 1000 yards away and took readings of wind again. I was shooting flat, no slope. I punched all that info along with all my bullet info into my ipod app called Isnipe and I also tried Ballistic app. Using G1 ballistics it said to dial in 21.53 MOA for drop. So that would be 81 clicks approx right? I am using a leupold VX 3 6.5-20 LR scope with 1/4 MOA clicks. so I dial up the scope and shoot and it lands about 6.5 MOA low according to scope redicle. So I dial in 6.5 more MOA and the impact point does not change. By the time I got it so my drop was dialed in I had dialed up 49 MOA or 196 clicks. So I checked out G7 ballistics and double checked my atmosphere readings. G7 said to only dial up 16.53 MOA yet I had to dial my scope to the maximum of 49 MOA. Specs on the scope say I should be able to dial 94 MOA???? I am new to the long range shooting so I don't understand why I could only get 49 MOA out of scope and why I had to dial so much higher than what the Ballistics of Isnipe and Ballistic told me to dial. Anyone know what I am doing wrong?

If the specs for the scope say that total elevation is 94 minutes, that is from one limit to the other.
Theory and calculations are all very well, but shooting tells the tale.
Six and a half minutes low at 1000 would be about six feet low. Was that what you observed? That would need about 26 clicks. If it took way more than that something is wrong.
I would suggest that you start over at 100. Zero. Add five minutes, shoot a group. Add another 5. Repeat in stages until you are up to 30 minutes elevation. You should be about 2 1/2 feet high. Are you getting nice, even predictable changes? Reverse the procedure, come back down in stages. Did the groups coming down coincide with the ones fired going up?

I just zerod the rifle at 100 yards before that shooting session with a sub MOA group. When I shot the 6.5 MOA low at 1000 yards with the 21 MOA it told me to come up, it looked like roughly 6 feet low. I then dialed it up 6 more MOA which is 24 clicks. I shot again and it never looked like it came up at all. Like I said, by the time I brought it up that 6 feet I had in total dialed up 49 MOA from my 100 yard zero. It felt like the scope was not coming up compared to what the numbers said it should be coming up. I dialed the scope back down 49 MOA and dialed the windage back to where it was when I zerod it. I never fired it again to check my zero. Next time I go out I will. Windage adjustments were fairly accurate. Might be time to get a nightforce haha.

I suggest the Night force! I some times get going to fast and slip some info into Exbal to quick and get crazy results too. I read a good rule once when dealing with ballistic programs. "JUNK IN JUNK OUT." Now don't get me wrong, I am not trying to tick you off or say I'm better. But you might have inputed an adjustment in Isipe at 1/8 MOA or mayde you have 3600 feet/sec. These are some small things that I have entered too fast and my results were way out of wack.

If there is one thing I have learned when shooting ballistic programs. It is to believe them! More often that not it is my error than the program. And also I really am not a fan of those gold scopes. They seem to pleague me with curses!!!

^^
Not sure about iSnipe, but it's definitely worth the $29.99 USD for the Bullet Flight (military version). Gets me to 1000 yds and beyond all the time ;)

Did it actually not change, or did you mistype?

Well I dialed in 6 MOA and from what my naked eye could see it never came up. I am on my way out to see if it zero'd back in at 100 yards when I set it back to where I had it. Then I am going to try 800 yards. I never tried bullet flight by I did try Ballistic Tactical. Same results basically as isnipe.

I'm wondering if your elevation turret is the problem here. 6 MOA should be visible at 1000 yards.

I suggested trying the elevations on the scope at 100 to make sure it is tracking predictably. Any problem will show up, might be better than guessing at long range.

Alright I went and shot at some paper targets at 100 yards. The gun was 7 inches low. I dialed it up and it came up fairly accurately. Still strange how when I come back down that 49 MOA it ends up 7" low. Then I went and set up my steel target at 800 yards. Took all my atmosphere data, wind data etc (shooting perfectly flat again) and punched it into my Ballistic program on ipod touch. It told me to come up about 12.5 MOA (isnipe said just over 13 MOA). So I dial up 12.5 MOA (50 clicks) and fire a round. Low probably 6 feet. I brought it up 5 MOA and was still fairly low, didn't look like it came up near what it should have. By the time I got it dialed in I had to come up 25.5 MOA. 12.5 MOA more than what the ballistic calculator told me. Not exactly sure what to say. All data in calculator is correct, I made sure. Conditions for both days were near perfect, warm with almost no wind.

Are you saying the compooter program is not working properly? How on earth can I ever expect to get my first shot on target if the bloody copooter is to blame. What a burn.
Stoopid compooter program.

It just about sounds like your scope is 1/8th. Both time you had to just about double your adjustments. Have you had any warrenty work done on that scope? The only reason I ask is I sent one away to the rep in Alberta and... Lets just say it was a 4x12 when I sent it and when it came back it was a 3x9???? Some how the person did'nt see the details on the objective end and put on the wrong power ring?? Like I said before. I think these scopes with the gold rings have a curse-ed hate for me.

Now don't get me wrong the glass in excellent but I tend to stay away because of past experience.
