Am I expecting too much?

I've got this rifle that started out it's life as a Savage 340b in 222 Rem. When I got it the stock was broken off right about at the recoil lug and the barrel was completely rusted out. I replaced the barrel with a Rem. take-off in 17 Rem. and carved a new stock for it. This action, for those of you who don't know, has a single locking lug, so it probably doesn't support the cartridge evenly in the chamber. Now that you have some idea of what we are working with, am I being unreasonable when I expect sub-MOA groups out of this thing or is that something that really can't be answered due to the limitless variables that need to be considered when dealing with accuracy? i am getting about 1.25 MOA with no load development to speak of.
 
Without doing any load development, 1.25" isn't horrible. Mind you, a lot depends on how good the barrel is. Did you glass bed the stock and do the trigger?
 
you should be able to get it shoot under one MOA with some tuning. Although the rifle sounds like a piece of crap :)
 
I had done some load development on one that was under MOA for ten rounds, I was impressed, because of the cheap bolt.
I also have one in .222 Remington downstiars that goes well under MOA on any day of the week, despite the cheap bolt ( and other cheap stuff in the rifle !)

I think I have posted this pic somewhere before, but here it is again. To answer the glass bedding question, the rifle is sitting in my bedding cradle in the picture.

Sunray: How do you mean, do the trigger? I've had it apart and cleaned a bunch of gunk out of it, but nothing else. It's actually a better trigger than any modern Stevens or Savage non-accu-trigger that I have tried.

those use a Savage barrel nut... im curious, how much did it cost to have the Remmy take-off barrel re-threaded and installed by a smith? did you run into any issues? Savage take-off barrels are few and far between here in Canada so im wondering if its worth just having a Remmy take-off rethreaded.

1.25" groups with no load development in what was an old POS is impressive.... but i dont know if id be too happy firing a 50+ year old formerly neglected gun with just one recoil lug with loads approaching 50,000 CUP. you are a braver man than i am :)

then again, i know some people who regularly fire full-power commercial .308 Win in 100yr old small-ring Mausers and still have faces, so perhaps im just overly paranoid :)
 
I actually bought the barrel and action for fifty bucks from my cousin who got the barrel from deceased gunsmith's son for something like ten bucks. My cousin is a machinist (not a gunsmith) and he rethreaded the barrel himself using a CNC lathe. Then I frightened the crap out of him with long and convoluted explanation of headspace, which made him loose interest in the project. I installed the barrel myself. Anyone who isn't a retard can do it.

A Remington take-off barrel has a thick enough shank so you can easily cut it down to the smaller diameter of the Savage 340 action, but I am not sure if it would work as well on the newer savage actions which might have a thicker shank.

Don't worry about what Todbartell says,he can't even do bedding without having to send it to a gunsmith. The stock looks good,you obviously have some talent for this stuff.Goof luck and don't let the pinheads bother you.
 
Fwiw, my Grampa's 340 in 222 has never shot much better. Yours certainly looks alot better. I will be picking it up for yote control this winter and will try to post my findings with it. I like your retard comment. I almost need that for my sig line.........lol

Nice job on the stock.
