The hook is just in my lip and its not set too well. I think I can still get off the line. :D Help. :D

I'm contemplating a Rem 700 in .300 rem saum.

I woke up this morning knowing I did not need another rifle at the moment and if I did it would be 6mm or smaller. Suddenly I find myself seriously contemplating purchasing this little fat magnum. I would appreciate advice on whether I should buy, based on your experience. Heres some background/thoughts.

1. I have always wanted to own a Remington 700.

2. I have absolutely no idea what I will use this for. I have 308s that do more than I need. I'm telling myself its an investment. :)

3. I reload, is the brass easy to find?

4. I'm figuring the barrel life is gonna be better than some of the other magnums with their bigger powder usage?

5. I don't ever see 300 saums for sale, is the caliber dying? Not that I care but it might mess up my investment idea.

6. Oh yeah and the morning after a night on the Guiness I flinch shooting 243. :D

All and any advice would be appreciated.

#1 sums it up. Possession is 9/10's of the need. But do you need it in that chambering?
#2 simply means that you are sensible.
#3 is being pro-active
#4 I'm gonna bounce back to #2. It's life will be shorter than the .308's you already have.
#5 No rifle is an "investment" since they don't really appreciate or depreciate in value, just kind of hold their own.
#6 How many nights is that?

Will reach out and touch something for sure. If I was recoil sensitive after Guiness I would avoid SAUM all together. I don't think this specialized cartridge will ever have mass appeal so as an investment I think you will get stuck with it and regret buying. Even reloading it is expensive & hard to find components from time to time. I like standard calibres like 30-06 if you haven't guessed already. My 2 cents

Take a few days to decide, if it is an impulsive thing it will fade. If you still feel like it then go for it. You mention that you have "308s". I take that to mean you have more than one. So buy the 300 SAUM and if you like it sell one of the 308's, if you don't like it then sell the 300.

I think far too many people put too much thought into cartridge names. The 300 SAUM to me is nothing more than a name, just a piece of brass that I am going to put powder in. If I can get the .308 bullet I am loading to do what I want it to that is all that concerns me. If you are recoil sensitive load up some reduced loads, it’s simple. If you want fast, flat shooting, load up some of those as well. These are the advantages of reloading.

300 SAUM brass is not hard to find either so don't be scared by the internet myths. I have owned mine for four years and not once have I ever had trouble finding it. Maybe down the road you might see that, but if I saw it happening I would just buy a bunch more. It doesn’t take that much brass to last the lifetime of the rifle.

go for the remington 700 they are great guns, if you don't like recoil and want a fast flat shooting gun that's not going to die and is easy to find reloading components for get a 7mm rem mag you won't regret it,
CAUTION you're beloved 308 will become a safe queen!

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm giving myself until the weekend to think about it. Its not on the EE so hopefully won't be sold. :)

The more I think about the 300 saum the more I am making it make sense in my head. I am not too recoil sensitive its just that I use a semi free recoil on the bench. I would hold this bugger in a death grip. :D

thanks again.
