Is it wrong to want another rifle....in the same caliber....with the same action ?
or should I be looking at a different caliber...different action...

I have been looking for a long while for a lighter replacement for my main hunting rifle, BSA CF-2 .308. It is a sentimental rifle so selling is out of the question, and being a manlicher stock the wood is getting some hunting nicks that I would rather not have there. I like the BLR rifle for the quick action and short bush characteristic, but second guess the med to long range accuaracy in case I want to go varmenting. Then there is the Tikka 595 that I am interested in, in the same cal. as my BSA which would be redundant...but it would save my other gun. Then there is another 595 in .243 that would mostly replace my BSA ( which I could use if needed ) and opens up some other shooting possibilities. Then there is the T3 options that really blow ones mind. Same price as a 595, lighter, and even more caliber choices....

If your not nutz when you start into shooting you will be after a short while !

Well your in Alberta right... get something in quarter bore or .260, maybe even a .270 and shoot a little farther out there!
Don't double up on calibers... you can still use the .308 if necessary

Always have a spare

When I'm at a job site and far from any suppliers I always bring two of any major tools just in case. It's only logical to apply that to your guns. At least thats the arguement I use on the old lady;)

Nope, nothing wrong with that... I have three Rem 700's HB's in .308 Win. One's a 700 P with the 26" barrel. The other 2 are Rem 700 BDL "V" with the 24" barrel. Love 'em all.... :D

You need to ask Stubblejumper this question, he has matching custom 30 ultrmags and matching 7mm STW's. He always takes both rifles, developes handloads for each one to shoot to the same POI just in case something ever happens to one of them.

If you want another gun, just buy it and stop feeling guilty, your BSA is an inanimate object. Despite our best efforts to romanticize our relationships with our guns, they don't really care about us or what else is in the gun cabinet.

I have 2 in.308 and have had 4 at one time, 3 O/U, 3 semi's, 3 singles, nothing wrong with repetition, especially if they have sentimental value....:)

You say that, but you've never had to dry the tears of a Rem600 that's been teased by the other bolts in the safe for being 'unsafe' and 'banned'. I had to put the poor guy in his own case--those new model 7s can be so cruel...

There's nothing wrong with having 2 rifles of the same cal on the same action.
Personally I'd be striving for a bit of versatility, one designed for hiking and the other designed for long range shooting or hunting from a blind.
You'd also have to develop different loads for the 2 as no 2 rifles are created equal.
That said, since there are so many different cartridges out there with lots of different capabilities I reckon sticking to the one cal would kinda be boring, especially since I find 308 one of the more humdrum cals.
Out of interest, what are you hunting when you need to go lighter?
I do reckon, though, that the whole "2 of everything in case one breaks" is taking yourself a little too seriously unless you're a guide or professional hunter.
With all due respect to Stubblejumper there are few if any animals in North America that a 7mm STW can not bring down should your 300 RUM be out of commission.

The reason I like the BLR is that I think it would be a good walking gun. Currently I hunt Whitetail and mulies with aspirations of Elk and Moose depending where I move to in the next few months. I keep coming back to the BLR as a choice but can never pull the triggar(sp) on buying one. I prefer short action chamberings...for now which is where the Tikka 595 keeps popping up. I have found a few for roughly the same price as a T3 hunter which is another really nice looking gun. I will have to go shopping and try some on for size ( all at the same time ).

The lighter hunting would be varmit type, which a .308 does just as well when you step down to a 125 or 130 bullet

Good in theory, but in practise I find one often gets useld frequently, and the other sits in the safe all the time. So, from time to time, I'll evaluate my collection, and sell off (or trade) the ones that see little use.

Well I found a seller of an old BLR steel frame with two clips and scope for what I think is a price that will let me see if I like it or not. So I will go with a different action in the same boring old 308 cal. and try to cull some Sask. wildlife with it. Then, Lord willing, I will need to buy another "must have, never goin' to pass up DEAL" which will be cause for more soul searching and reflective debate as the above mentioned question. Thanks for listenening to a guy convince himself that he needs another "tool" of sport. Cheers fellas and thanks for the advice.
