I went to get a box of 260 rem for a friend today in wholesale sports, 54$ for 20 rounds........... I almost fell over. why is 260 so expensive? must be a cheeper alternative out there, besides reloading

Unless you are shooting one of the old common chamberings that are making bulk and/or economy ammunition than this is the norm.

Exactly why I got into reloading.

I can buy a lot of components for what a box of shells are going for.

That does seem to be the norm these days . The common cal. ammo that you can normally find at Canadian Tire and Wal Mart seems to be staying down in price....the not so common cal. ammo is going through the roof ; but then again , even 22 lr seems to be getting scarce.....Walmart here has been out for over 2 months and I bought the last 4 boxes of Win. 555 bulk that Canadian Tire had today.....I am not sure what is going on with ammo production as Canadian Tire told me they are having difficulty in getting their ammo orders filled...

something to do with the states not having any...

reloading FTW.

Seems a buck around is not even two bucks around any more.
Dies, bullets, brass, powder and start cranking.
Oh, dang Kelly will catch me on this one..........primers too.

there is nothing wholesale about that chain.......I was looking at bullets today just for reloading and laughed my way out of the store.......on average I was seeing 10.oo a box more then most of the supporting dealers, and no price breaks on bulk orders of either kind either.
Lots of bullets to choose from, if you want to pay their premiums......

well ive looked all over for some reasonable priced 260 just aint out there that I can find. yes I know reloadin is the answer abd have loaded for many many years, but the fellow I was lookin for some for doesn't. just wanted some factory ammo for the new savage to test it out

I understand that the 260rem is relatively still a newcomer to the cartridge world: Still, even if they were match rounds, 54.00 is dear. Every 260rem shooter I've seen has been a reloader, and when it first appeared it was simply the 308, 7-08 necked down or 243 necked up wildcat. It still isn't a common round so this influences the price that you found but given more time I expect it will: It is after all, the American copy of the 100+ year old 6.5X55.

You are right and wrong here! The .308 WIN is the parent case of the .260 REM. and therefore, it is not a copy of the Swede.

LOL, you are also right and wrong here: While the 308win is the parent case of the 260rem, it is still an American duplication of what the 6.5X55 does much like the 280rem is a duplication of the 7mm Brenneke - True, neither are interchangeable but when compared non has no ballistic or practical advantage over the other, calibers are identical so the oldest of both sets is the development and anything after is a copy.
