Yesterday I had a strange experience at the range. I'll explain but let me put down some facts:

-The range is open only monday and thursday evening 7h00pm - 10h00pm
-Monday is the regular's night that fires 20 meters.
-Thursday is the evening for starters and quests to fire at 7 and/or 15 and/or 20 meters.
-The range has only 3 lanes each about 3 feets large. The range is indoor and under an arena. There is concrete everywhere except the door.
-The lanes are close together (proximity) only seperated by a hard plastic panel and the walls are very close about 1 1/2 feet from the lanes.

Let me talk about me:
-I a gun enthousiast since 3 years , own about 6 rifles and 2 handguns. I an avid reloader and can do some minor gunsmithing (glassbedding, etc..).
-I pass too much time on CNG forums.
-I enjoy long range shoooting (touched the plate at 915 yard this winter !) much more to learn but I am getting there :)
-I only own handgun since march.
-I can only go to the range every 2 weeks (both mondays and thurdays).
-Since march I fired about 750 rounds throught my P226.

The story ::

-Yesterday I was there a 7h00 pm first lane to the right. The RO was shooting I lane 2 and another guy in lane 3.
-Everything went fine until my 9th round. The first 8 where in the black circle (about 6 inches wide I think) at 20 meters.
-The 9th round , I jerked the trigger AND fliched . The round hit the wall to my right at about 18 meters . (I right handed)
-My 10th went on the target in the black circle.

-The RO told me that I'm not going to fire at 20 meters again that night (that means that my evening is finished at 7h05 after only 10 rounds) because at the range we have to forward the desk to the targets. So I have to go back Thursday.

I felt VERY offended, he's the RO and I am not, so I shut the fu..c up. , packed my things and left . I was angry because I like shooting but can't do it every week. One big mistake on a round and I did well the next one.

He's the RO, he his in charge of security but that bullet didn't fly across the other lanes, I went in the direction of the target, maybe off the backstop to my right. I had no one to my right.

It is a moment off ''too much concentration'' let me explain. When you do well in a series of shots , you want it to continue and the pressure build up. You don't want to screw at the end. So In a 2 X 5 shoot string the last ones are more important if you did well before. So in anticipation, I flinched. I was to slow to increase my finger pressure on the trigger , it is like the shoot was never going to happen, too much concentration. So I helped it a bit. I squeezed and jerked the trigger and flinched.

At the RO defense, a month a ago I did something like that . But I found what was wrong with my grip and corrected. I fired 2 or 3 round about 2-3 feets over the target in the upper woodbackstop. At the time he found it normal and even offered concil on the grip..

So on about 750 rounds only 4 really screw up and I end like this. I wasn't feeling great yesterday evening. I almost wanted to sell all those handguns.
It made me realised that this is the only club in town, and if the #### hit the fan I would have to drive 2 hours to the next range. I realised that I have to stop my buying spree (4000$ handguns in 2 months + reloading supplies 1200$) because I am dependant on the others to legally practice my hobby (handgun shooting).

NOW , if I can find money to finance my ATRS 338 Lapua improve ;) because up here we can fire rifle everywhere (the country is so large!).

You don't want to hear this, but if you are hitting the side wall, you need a break. Yes, everyone, me included, has at some point had a bad day at the range.

x2 "USP"
we have to put safety first, but I don't agree with the RO decision....
he can let you have a little brake, make the things clear that was a mistake and let you go on with your shooting....

I don't see the big deal....Unless I am missing something?

It's down range where bullets (well aimed or poorly aimed) are supposed to go, right?

So what does it matter if the shot went to the side? If it was a danger, then there is something wrong with the range set up and should be closed until made safe.

There are holes all over the ceiling at the RA center range in Ottawa.....one little bullet in the wall is nothing. :)

Good thing you weren't doing a dual wield ala John Woo.:D I tried it once with a pair of 357 revolvers...rounds on a 12" square target at 25m=0.:p

It is my vision on the thing, the bullet went down the alley, just some feets from where it was supposed to be.

I have problem to understand the RO decision, nothing unsecure there. The days before he was very ''cool'' with me, we where even discussing my implication in the club CA.

From your side of the story it sounds like he over reacted. I'd be interested to hear why he made that decision. Whatever the case, I've never been in that situation. I'm trying to imagine the dimensions. hitting a side wall at 18meters doesn't sound too bad...it if it 10 meters I'd be really concerned. Maybe you lost sight that it's just for fun?

I'll ask him thurdays when I return. I feel is reaction so big, I HAve to talk to him about that and give my point of view.

You failed...The RO over reacted.

Unless you did something unsafe he really over reacted.

Everyone sends a flyer here and there except for me of course.:p

Tried it with 44.mag

IIRC you were there as one was your the other was Colin's...I hit nuttin but back stop. I am a big ass kid too!

I would have asked for a lot more info before I left for the evening. Without doing that you are simply complaining to a bunch of guys at the watering hole, what's the use in that ? What can we possibly write that would be of use to you ? Next time ask a bunch of questions, find your own answers. I do not see why a RO would shut you down unless you hit the wall like 5 feets in front of you, or something equally ridiculous, even I would ask you to leave then.

If the shot went down range, it's in a safe direction. Mistakes happen. If you were doing it repeatedly, then I'd wonder what the hell you were doing wrong and try to help. If you were beyond help, I'd ask you to leave and do some dry fire practice before coming back.

I agree with most of the previous comments, the RO over-reacted. The bullet went down range and apparently did not create a hazardous situation. Unless you did something he expressly told you not to, I don't see the problem. What's next, will he send everyone home who is out of the black? I'd be looking for an alternate place to shoot.
