I see videos and watch guys at the IDPA matches, not seemingly having to change their grip on the gun to activate the mag release.
I can't, on any of the semi's I've tried. Best I can do is use the right side release on the Tara, which has them on both sides.
Say what you wish 'bout the Tara, but this is the one I shoot most accurately. Now if I can only get the mags(5) to function properly.
The other guns are reversible, but is it OK(practical) to use the right hand release for right hand shooters for IDPA.
I'm near 6 ft., what's with my thumbs? Unusually short, or what? BTW, some of my other body parts aren't exactly huge.

Thanks for over sharing trebor...lol
I have a similar issue..have to twist my grip slightly to get good pressure...guess mine are undersized too..

Most are breaking their grip, they just re-establish it very quickly (during mag reach/insert).

Something like this...(start at 1 minute)

That was an interesting video, good way to practice. Still waiting for my rPal tho so will be a while before I can try that :)

I suffer from short fingers and thumbs. I don't like having to change my grip, even slightly, during a reload. I feel it's inefficient and induces a variable in my form. I had to install and extended mag release and get thinner grips to reach the trigger properly for my 1911. I no longer have to struggle to reach or adjust my grip on the reload.

Maybe us folks are better off with the single stack. So far, all I've been shooting are Glocks, and the like.
The Glock 48 is advertised as a single stack, but the mags are just a hair narrower than any double stack 9mm.

I had a Glock 48. It was too small but not uncomfortably so. Yes, there is a reason I prefer single stacks. I had a Glock 21 and had to install an extended slide and mag release. I could never really reach the trigger properly though and my shots would always get pushed left - not enough finger on the trigger.

I am right handed and switch all my mag releases to the right side if they are reversible. I find it faster and I don't have to change my right hand grip to complete the mag change. One should remember John Browning was left handed and put the mag release on the left side of his 1911. Just conjecture on my part but firearm manufacturers just followed suit. :>).

I have timed my reloads enough to say by making the change my reloads are marginally faster using the right side mag release. Interestingly all the shotguns and rifles I have owned all have had the strong hand trigger finger pushing off the safety when it is located either in front of or behind the trigger guard.

I do let the SO/RO know the mag release is on the right side. Reduces the chance of an exuberant SO/RO calling a finger violation when I use the trigger finger to push the mag release.

I wear a medium large golf glove.

Take Care

I'm going to go with the right hand mag release. Just needed some input on it. I don't see why more don't go that way. Thanks all.

They might be bump releasing it.
On some, one you have a fresh mag in there, and the follower is no longer holding the release up,
all you have to do is give a quick smart bump to the butt and the action will close.

I do it all the time. So far it's pretty consistent on my fav shooters. I don't compete tho.

I tried out the S&W SD9VE, and found it to have the best functioning mag release with the least amount of shifting my hand to reach it, at least for me.

And the trigger isn't all that bad.
