Hi all,

This may have been asked before but since things like this are always changing I had hoped to start a new thread with new dates and information.

I got my license last fall and have acquired a savage .22 for starters however I am looking for a club/group/association etc. that does amateur/newbie nights or something to that effect. I do this just for fun and don't intend on learning to be the best in the west or anything of that jazz so I don't know if I need 1 on 1 mentoring exactly but just somewhere where I won't feel embarrassed for being such a terrible shot. Preferably something low cost as well. I don't currently have a range membership but if the right place got my attention or if someone can recommend a range with a good amateur night I would consider it.

Does something like that exist in the Calgary area?

Thanks in advance!

Hi. There is the DCRA in the form of the AB Rifle Assoc. That's mostly center fire, but there is a .22 part too. Add the W's. .albertarifle.com/
You could talk to the guys working in the assorted gun shops as well.
Somebody who actually lives there will be along to help.

I am unaware of any amateur/newbie nights at the local ranges. I would just research the clubs in the area, pick one and join. Who cares if you are not a good shot out of the gate? There is no shame in that, everybody starts off in the same boat. Actually just with some casual interaction among club members I am sure you will pick up some tips. Just observe the safety rules and have fun. If down the road you decide you want instruction maybe you can find someone at the club to mentor you, or you could seek out professional training.

Thanks for the reply.

It's more just that it would be nice to go with other newer shooters so I can learn the ropes without embarrassing myself haha. I am quite confident on my safety skills but it's more of the unwritten range etiquette and that sort of thing.

Thanks again.

I have been shooting a little less than 2 years. I was terrible with my hand gun. I still suck actually but getting better. Thing is everyone has to start somewhere. Know one cares how bad you shoot at the range just as long as you follow the rules. I would be willing to take you to my range in Calgary if interested. I have a couple of 22s a 12 gauge my 9mm handgun and my 9mm sub 2000 to shoot. If interested pm me. Or just go for it don't be afraid to ask questions to the guy next to you. I have asked plenty of noob questions to shooters at my club and all have never had a problem sharing there secrets or helping out the new guy. Go nuts have fun...

Like shot-in-the-dark says, the last thing you need worry about is how well you shoot. It's a thing that requires regular practice and upper body toning exercise to get and stay good. Or even mediocre.
