Amazing 308 Win load data!

Well I am bringing this thread back...Why Not? have you tried the 200gr GS or any other 200gr bullets with RL17? What about the 220gr bullets, have you tried any of them with RL17?

I do not use RL17, according to the supplier of Reloader I use, it has not been approved for Canadian use not that that matters with supply being almost non existant here.
I have been using Vitavhouri N550 with 200 SMKs and 208 Amaxs with great results.

I'm currently getting 2650 with 210 Matrix VLDs over N550, from my 28" barrel, I haven't tried R-17. But my bullets are seated out so that the base of the boat-tail does not extend below the neck, and my lead is cut long, so don't try this with an off the shelf .308 kids. Considering that a .300 Winchester 220 gr factory load only kicked out 220s at an advertised 2700, and probably wouldn't chronograph that fast, this is pretty impressive. However, other than to fill a very specific niche, with a very specific rifle, it serves no practical purpose, and one would be much better served with a .300 magnum for general use.
 
Great read guys, thanks for all the awesome information. Just one question. I've recently have boughten 3 different reloading manuals and none say nothing about rl17.
So what loading manuals has this type of powder mentioned, or are you getting this off their website. or just making your recipes up?
 
I am currently in the middle of a re17 vs H4350 vs superformance vs varget debate with my rifle. Also 165 or 180 bullets, haven't tried anything heavier or lighter. Also SST or GMX, also going to try TTSX.
So far, best is :
165 sst, 59.5 gn H4350 (compressed), 2950 fps, 1.25 group @ 200 meters
180 sst, 54 gn Re17, 2700 fps, no groups yet but this is the middle of the node

Superformance so far has been disappointing, but I have only tried the 165 sst. It is a denser ball powder, so it will take less case volume, and may be good for heavier\longer bullets. Pressure signs at lower velocities than I thought, and the ladder did not look promising at all.

Varget is next up, as well as some heavier bullets. The 180 gn sst ladder with re17 was impressive, i.e less than 2" vertical at 200 yards using between 51 and 55 grains.

These numbers come from a tight chambered Sako in 30-06. So tight that mag length is not an issue at all. I haven't blown myself up yet, but if you reload to these numbers, on your own head be it.

I believe it though, as I have some Norma surplus powder that gave me 2690 fps with 200 kksp in an '06
 
I have been working with RL 17 in my 6mm Remington and my 7x57 for the last couple of months.
It has proved to be a winner in both chamberings.
I load 52 grains of 17 behind the 140 AB in my 7x57 for 2955 average [22"barrel] and stellar accuracy, with most groups under .7 moa.
The 6mm, with the 100 Partition uses 45 grains for 3210 [24"barrel] and similar accuracy.
There are no unusual pressure signs, and brass head expansion is non-existant.
I will shoot these in hot weather to check for any surprises, but other than that, I have a couple of excellent hunting loads.
The 338 Win Mag is next on my "try" list.

Same here. I just tried it in my 7mm RM with the 150gr Partitions I got from you and I was quite pleased. Three shot groups went into just over 1/2" C to C. I'd be done right there except the 175gr Partitions with 7828 went into .287" C to C! I only had 3 with me so I am loading some more up to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I'll also load some more 150gr + RL17 up and try them at longer distances.

Been away for a while on the Kenai Penninsula. Tough trail, but someone had to do it! ;)

Yes, I have worked with both the 200 gr Grand Slam and the 220 gr Sierra. Just about to leave for Carmacks. Will post some results when I get back.

Just been crazy busy the past month.

Here's the top load with the Speer 200 gr and Re17. Thought it was the GS, but it was the Hot-Cor spitzer, 2602 fps, 3006 ft.lb. energy!

Can't find my 220 gr Sierra data. :(

Any data/info on the temperature sensitivity of RL17? Have a pound, yet undecided to dedicate it to .308 or .300WSM - leaning toward the 300WSM as also have several pounds of RL15 for which the .308 is a more likely candidate.
