Mar 28 2010, left work tonight, driving down the gravel road and a whitetail buck ran across the road.

The buck still had both antlers, from last fall.

I couldn't believe it. Never heard of a buck carrying his rack this late. I jumped out of the truck and ran into the cutblock to get another look at him. He was with 4 other bucks, that had all lost their racks... it was like a 120-130" whitetail.

Quite a few years ago we saw a 4 point that still had its antlers on opening day of the fishing season. That makes it about the second week in May. I've read somewhere that if a buck gets his nuts wracked up it interferes with the antler shedding sequence, sometimes to the point of never shedding at all, or staying in velvet for stupid lengths. A friend shot a rather nice buck in mid November, still in full velvet. Its hanging in his basement.

I saw a 4, or possibly 6 pointer last week here in Ontario....antlers were bright white, hard to miss, in a herd of 9 or so others

I bet that buck is getting all the action! Maybe deer ###### is the answer as to why no shedding. :D

I was in Jasper Park laast weekend and a few of the bull elk still have antlers on. Food supply, stress,& overall health/condition of the animals contribute to how long they carry antlers. We all have herd of guys that grab an animal, shot during season, and has the antlers come off. Just another twist in trying to figure them out :).
