So a while ago I bought a TNA ambi mag release with the intention of putting it in a type 97. Now, previously my t97 was not very fussy with magazines and just about everything would work in it with the exception of gen 3 pmags. So I get the mag release installed and then only pmags (gen 2 and 3 suddenly) and the original type 97 mags work. Not only this, but the magazine drops from the gun when it is fired :(

No big deal, I’ll just convert it back to the original release and put the ambi in my AR lower since that is what it’s made for and surely will work right? Well now the AR is picky with mags, LAR mags get seized in the mag well and I need to use the right side mag release to get them out. So I’m beginning to think it’s actually the TNA ambi mag release that is my problem and not the magazines or rifles. Obviously I can’t function test the AR to see if the mag drops, has anyone experienced anything like this? Or have any suggestions on how to proceed?

Sounds like your Norgon knockoff needed another turn, in on the t97 and out on the AR15, or it is out of spec. A picture of the t97, original ar15 and TNA mag catchs side by side might help.

When you install - you decide how many turn you give to the mag release so it clear the frame. Turn it out one turn a a time. And check.

This is how you get more mag engagement in or out of the mag slot.

Ambi or not - it’s the same process.

My guess is that you screwed it full it - turned it - just to clear the frame..all in, and you don’t get the travel necessary to drop the mag.

Thanks for the help, I’ve tried this already on both rifles to see if I could find the sweet spot to no avail, that’s what got me thinking maybe the mag catch was out of spec.

With the round button on the T97 you should be able to fine tune the catch more than with the oval button of an AR15, maybe you just need to rotate the button slightly instead of the catch.

Type 97 and AR catches are not the same although people think they are. Hold them side by side and the catch section of the AR part is flush depth wise with the rear shelf where the cross pin is. On the type 97 part there is no shelf and the catch portion actually sits out deeper. You can install an AR Ambi catch and it will grab the mag slightly but if you pull down you can almost always yank the mag out without depressing the button.

People assume they can install an AR Ambi catch on the gen 1 T97 and they can but it is barely holding their mags in.
