SO I went to the range with a friend, I brought out a whole crate of my rifles (litraly an SKS crate).
I told him what ever he want s to fire have at it but bring your own ammo.

he bought .223 american eagle 55 grain FMJ's to run in the mini 14's

now in the first box he ran through he had a case rip in half, clean break near the top of the case (reference picture). I checked it out, checked the bore gave everything checked out ok.
i figured it was just a bad case and told him "no big deal, but if it happens again stop shooting their is a major problem"
sure as ####, not a mag later another one rips inhalf but this time the mini rams another round home. it jammed in the top half of the broken case and stops the bolt out of battery. it was very forchenant that the primer did not go off when the free floating firing pin hit it (there was a light strike) and I had to ram it out with a cleaning rod.

The gun checked out ok, and using my hand loads no further issues were encountered.

inspecting the FC brass later I found cracking on the case head seem, cracks in the same locations that the 2 other cases broke at and split necks. When I got home I checked the gun with head space gauges and it was in spec, it chambered a go but not a no-go, confirming that the ammo was the issue.

I know that there has been debates in the past about how safe this stuff is in semi automatics, but this here confirms to me that it is not safe to fire in a repeating rifle.

check the headspace.
my vz-58 223 have done this to me with american eagle and norinco. After the warranty inspection , they found it was my heaspace(to soft bolt carrier and locking bridge) and improper gas piston size.

already done as mentioned in my original post.

chambered a go but not a no-go gauge.

no other ammo had issues, no signs of stress or pressure. that was win, JP (norc), IVI brass

I've run almost 1K rounds of the AE "tactical" stuff that came in an ammo can through my Mini's and AR without any problems. I've had less failures than with Norc CJ93.

Interesting, and glad you were able to extract it in one piece easily. That one could have been a #####.

Federal brass is known to be softer than other brands, but this certainly shouldn't happen.

Contact Federal with the case batch number and tell them the issue.

1-800-831-0850 or 1-800-322-2342 and ask for Product Service

Federal is a good company to deal with and stands by there products. I had some defective .40S&W rounds, splitting down the middle. Federal made things right. I used to own a Mini-14 and have fired lots of Federal ammo with no problems.

Are you referring to the American eagle tactical bulk stuff? I've shot hundred out of my AR without any hiccups :/

+1, 100% through my Norc CQ-A to date.

I've had accuracy issues with this AE .223 55gr FMJ but nothing more. Okay for plinking.

It's the most accurate factory ammo I have found in my CQ-A so far. Each rifle really is a law unto itself.
