shot my new CZ858 yesterday.

i wanted to try out non-corrosive ammo so i bot american eagle (AE) and i had alot of feeding problem, it jammed 6 out of 40 rounds then i tried the cheap czech ammo, no jamming after 20 rounds.

i know the problems is with the AE ammo but i want to know if anyone knows why im having problems, could it be the softer casing? the RO thought the AE ammo might be too strong.

FWIW, AE ammo functions flawlessly in my SKS. I've only fired surplus through a buddy's CZ858 (roughly 250 rds); the only issue we had was one of the mags needed the follower to be broken in a bit.

As noted in the other thread, SKS/58/858's were designed to use steel case, FMJ fodder...
Some with work with the FMJ American Eagle, but a lot won't.
Using ammo suitable for hunting is dicey, as feeding problems abound.

Would polishing the chamber help that?

well, i'll try it.

all 6 rounds got stuck part way and slightly to the right. the chamber where i pointed with a pen has left a deep mark on every casing.

I experienced the same problem with my CZ-858 and ended up selling it before I feed it steel cased ammo. I think it would of been fine. I prefer my VZ-58 and she functions fine with surplus steel cased ammo, I'm not going to bother with and commercial brass cased ammo.

Fired 2 boxes of AE 7.62x39 out of mine, have to let the bolt carrier snap forward more and not ease it in, but once the first round was chambered and fired I had no feeding issues. The brass came out with a deep dent in the same part of the case each time.

Hello,
My is working great!

Thats weird...looks like its been made too small, maybe manifacture error or something or the receiver has been squeezed? dunno nevertheless mine is great and im happy with it!

I did some testing with my 858 tonight; I think I may use a die grinder to lower and lengthen the angle of the feed ramp between the magazine and the chamber. Has anyone else tried this? What other ideas are out there? I'm very confident that it won't hurt anything, but if anyone knows different, let me know.

I get feeding problems with brass too. Long gouge on the side of the federal brass casings. Got to let the bolt carrier really slap it in. Only feeds somewhat reliably from the right stack of the mag (with softpoints). I only feed it FMJ combloc steel now. Now I wish someone made a ballistic nylon tip with a steel case in x39 so I could go hunting with it (yeah right...:dancingbanana: ).

Don't alter the feed ramp, polish it if you must but grinding it is going to turn your nice 600 dollar rifle into something worth considerabley less.

You can also try lightly polishing the bolt face and inside bearing surface of the extractor to try and get the cartridge to slide up easier. Just keep the die grinder away from the job!

Just one more idea try your AE ammo in a bunch of different mags, never know one might work better. You could also try and work on the feed lips abit, if that turns into a train wreck your only out 40 bucks.

Have fun

DONT GRIND IT:runaway:

Its that brass of the AE ammo. I have the same problem the brass deforms with AE .The only thing that AE works for is the mini 30 like greentips said. I cant get AE to work for me at all

I agree; don’t grind. Polish it. My VZ58 has shot lots of SA and AE ammo (brass) without issue.

Might some of these issues be limited to the 858? Maybe the chrome chamber and barrel assists with the brass casses on on the 58. Does the 858 have a chrome chamber?

Also, that sure is a nice receiver you've got there. Mine (VZ58) looks like a shop student welded in the full automatic block device - it's even got a spot of rust on it that I can’t get rid of. Mine also looks well used, though it’s got a sharp barrel and no rust/ pitting (except for the darn block) The 858 sure looks a lot nicer.

no, not me, i have no intention of using the grinder , just polishing a couple of areas that the soft brass casing has shown difficulties, yes, the feeding ramp is one of them .

i probably wont use soft casing ammo again but im glad i did cos it shown me some possible problem areas that otherwise a hard casing would not have shown. so im back to using cheap czech ammo. :dancingbanana:

as for the quality of work, im pretty pleased , nice thru out , not bad for $650 and it includes 4 x 30/5mag , leather pouch, bayo, cleaning kit and sling.

i would be totally pleased, if it had a chrome barrel , and folding stock readily available.:D
