I was talking with someone today and during the conversation hunting came up. He was born in Canada, moved to the USA at 20, moved back here 30+ years later. He was avid hunter and fisher in the states. Does he have to take the hunting course and PAL to continue here? Is there a way to challenge or apply and skip the courses?

If you don't have a PAL,you could challenge the firearms safety exam. Most provinces will let you skip the first time hunters course if you have held a hunting license in another location.

just beware. i challenged the PAL and RPAL in alberta without taking the course. all was well until i returned to ontario and took the hunters safety course. they would not issue me my hunters safety certificate until i took the firearms course. money grab? i guess so!

Thanks guys. I will pass it on. He's in his late 50's early sixties, been hunting 30+ years and doesn't really want to sit through courses on hunting. I will pass the info on and let him decide his course.

I challenged both the tests recently. He would be well served to get the manuals and watch the videos (both can be found online). Lots of questions that are worded in specific ways that experience alone wouldn't prepare you for. It's not what you know but what the government wants you to know. ;)

That's a good heads up. Did you succeed on both? Costs? Time involved?

I studied for a week or so by reading the manual before bed and watched the videos (on YouTube) twice. I didn't really study for the RPAL until the day before the exam because I didn't realize handguns were "restricted" :)rolleyes: I've been in the US to long ).

My lowest score out of all the tests was 92% so I think I did OK. I think I did well on the practical because I had experience with most of the guns which helped a lot.

Costs were very reasonable for me because the guy giving the exam was a friend of a friend so I'm not sure what your costs would be.
