Ammo as trading stock?

Sounds kinda silly doesn't it?, but after seeing two grown men almost resort to blows over two boxes of ammo yesterday, and some head scratching @ the Sail ammo counter this afternoon, I did just that....bought up the remaining stock of a caliber that has been a pain in the a$$ to find anywhere @ any price. To be perfectly honest, I kinda felt a little guilty and prickish because I already had a few boxes tucked away at home, but the word @ many gun counter's nowadays is "buy it now...because our supplier is out and can't give us any idea of when more will be available". I didn't buy this ammo to resell at a profit, but I did buy it to use as trading stock with other gun guys. I've found that a lot of gun guys couldn't care less about money...it disappears too quick and hardly ever goes back into their hobby(especially when they have families), but if you bring a trade to the table, especially if its something they've been looking for, it gives you some bargaining power. Its worked well for me in the past......Any thoughts?
 
I've been hearing this "buy it now cause we ain't gettin' more" b.s. since I got my license and low and behold there is always more coming in. It's scare tactics to boost business and nothing more....now excuse me while I go and admire my 20k round stash of 22lr, but remember it's all b.s.
 
why would you get any backlash? you are free to spend your money on what you want. If people got mad that you cleaned out the stock well you snooze you loose IMO
Buy it cheap and stack it deep is a way of life!

LOL! I hear you on the 22lr....I bought into the .22 panic myself :) I'll be shooting rimfire for the rest of my life I think!
 
simple economics of supply and demand. Of course its good trading stock among shooters, just like shoes are good trading stock amongst Imelda Marcos wannabees. You always want to hold something that is of value to someone who has something of value you want. Go to afghanistan and see what ak47's are worth to a man wanting to protect his family.
 
I buy ammo because its a good deal, not because I need it. As for my Go To calibers, I also have reloading supplies to last for decades. It would sure suck for everyone else if they stopped importing/making ammunition. It would have no effect on me personally other than I would have to surf the net for different items to spend my cash on.
 
There's still a good amount of .22lr out there,although the premium stuff is starting to dry up around here. I've been buying some of the pricy larger caliber ammo that seems to be really slow to replenish on the shelves.
 
If you have the storage space and the cash to invest then there is no reason not to stock up on ammo. The secret is to buy the ammo when you see it on sale, even if you don't "need" it. I certainly didn't need to buy more mini mags recently but at 270.00 a case I bought two more to throw on the pile. I still have cases of Blazer, AE, and even some Thunderbolts, all bought when I saw them on sale. I am well buffered to last any shortages that may occur between shipments.

x2 One does not have to justify spending their own money on anything in a free market.
 
There is nothing wrong with buying up stuff, heck if I see it and want it, I buy it! Tough s### to those who think that I have to cater to their needs!
 
Well as an investment, it'll be good for trading when the world ends, but until that happens, you'll probably find better returns elsewhere. I'm not really sure how much you have to get before it counts as hoarding lol.

It's only hoarding if it's messy and you end up on TLC. My stash is well organized and quite pretty to look at.

Be a long time until I go through all 200 rounds of mixed calibers I have squirrelled away.....
