Bought a crate of SKS ammunition. Really nice ammo, brass case.

Made in Romania, first I've seen.

Anyhow, the ammo was in paper boxes of 20 rounds,
and this was on top.

Is it an opener?

The ammo you bought is normally packed wooden crate/2xspam cans/paper boxes. The importer (probably century arms) removed the boxes from the spam cans so they could affix those stupid labels and then re-sealed the crates, presumably so they could sell boxes individually.

It's a pet peeve of mine. It increases the cost of the ammunition and reduces it's suitability for long term storage.

New (not so new actually, in the last 2 years IIRC) Federal NRCAN regs for ammo. A royal pain in the ass that has caused the price of surplus to go up, because SOMEBODY'S gotta pay for the labels and time needed to open all the crates and put these stupid phucking labels on them.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr.........:mad::mad:

They only need the labels on each package if they are intended for retail sale individually. That's not a new requirement.

Many dealers, including Marstar, Tradex, and Wolverine, still sell case lots in the original tins.

A question then Steveo;

Why did the last case of 1000 rnds Czech surplus I bought from P & D in Edmonton have to be relabeled and repacked in a cardboard box?

Hell, I LOVE those wooden cases some surplus comes in, they make great storage boxes.

I'd guess, and it's just a guess, that it depends on the importer and their intended market. If retailers sell by the individual box, they all need to be labeled. WSS (amongst other retailers) used to break open Czech cases and sell the unmarked 20 round boxes. Someone probably caught hell for that and it changed the way some importers brought the ammo in.

I got these on Thursday and opened one last night to check it out. Chinese '69 dated M43 from Tradex:

Neat! My spam cans of Chinese dated from TradEx were hunks of rust, including the openers. Luckily I had an old opener like the one in OP's pic and it did just fine. The ammo was fine, despite the condition of the cans.

How can you tell yours is '69 Dated? The headstamp? Mine has the factory headstamp then 71, is mine 1971 manufacture?

So Romanian factory 22 - year 1966?

Yep.

Be interested to know how that stuff shoots.

Just picked up a 1400ct crate at Bartons. Overpaid a little, but its right there on the shelf so what are you gonna do?

Trying to stay on track for min 1 crate a month and the deal on the Chin x39 looks pretty good.

The deal is great, especially considering it's shipped to your door for less than you pay at Bartons.

Haven't shot it yet. I was too busy after work today trying to kill myself on my new (to me) YZF-250F. I think I cracked some ribs and I know I bled all over my jersey.

Gotta love buying ammo by the kilo eh LOL

And a case a month sounds about right cos one day this stuff might not be on the shelves.Then the cases in the basement are suddenly worth more than Kryptonite.
My local shop opens up the odd case and flogs it for 10 bucks a box, buy the case its 5 bucks a box..I'd do the same if I were a shop owner.
Happy shootin'
Almost forgot, has anyone reloaded the brass cases ? Seems to me brass should be ok for handloading.....
