I can only fit two boxes in each can. They are not tall enough to stack the boxes on top of one another, so all you can really fit is two side by side in the can with lots of left over space. If you took the shells out of the boxes, who knows...

Thanks. I might be better off with a foot locker haha or two of each:)

No doubt! I was talking about the ammo cans (7.62 x 200 rnds.) that Princess had on special. When I went to the one out here in Coquitlam, they had a few larger size cans that would work well. I got one that was for mortar rounds that holds a hell of a lot. You could easily fit twenty boxes of twenty-five shells in that sucker. Might be worth a look at some of the other stores for them. Forget the one in Coquitlam as I think I got the last large one...

I've just finished modifying it to lock. I machined the threads off a M12x30 bolt, only leaving a few threads at the base. Took most of the bolt head off leaving only a 1/4". Machine down a matching nut to 1/3 its original thickness. Taper the end of the bolt slightly and cross drill for the lock, and seal it in place with some RTV.

Here is the can itself:

One more just showing general capacity.

I'm too chicken to do a camo paint job on my guns so I did one on my ammo can. Didn't turn too bad for my first attempt with Krylon rattle can:D .

I finally picked up my ammo can. Put it in the trunk, drove off, and then heard two pops. My questions is it due to the cold and the fact they are sealed, being the reason for the popping? I never thought about it much before. Is this common?

Yep, change in temperature does it. Shows how well sealed they are!

No kidding! The only thing I am worried about is jamming full of shotguns shells and having it do that. Best would probably be to keep it at outside temperature when filling it up and then closing it. I am sure when they are loaded for their proper use, the space is accounted for, better than me jamming boxes of 12 gauge shells anyways.

I get 175 rds of 12 gauge in an M2A1 (.50 cal) Metal Ammunition box with a small amount of space to spare. I load my cans inside when they are warm. The pressure generated by the can expanding or contracting in cold weather is not enough to cause any damage to the ammunition inside, nor is it possible to initiate the ammunition located inside.

Maple Leaf eh, have you ever tried to get in the back end of an M2A1 (.50 cal) can. If you can bend up the back, you have one heck of a good set of titanium needle nose pliers.

Who said anything about using a Gerber Multitool on the wire? I was thinking about a straight blade screwdriver or a small pry bar. Get an edge in and start pushing. (Yeah, any tool will ultimate defeat any security system. But I'm thinking about ordinary tools.)

I do like the suggestion of using a trigger lock through the box and through the hasp. Someone was using all his brain cells when he made that realization.
