So before I stick some Velcro onto my 870....

I've looked at side saddles and the Velcro option and decided to go Velcro

I've purchased several of the hook and loop carriers so I can stick and go so before I pop the Velcro on is there a reason not to and to use a side saddle instead?

My only thought would be glue residue if I decided to change but some alcohol should remove that right.
I had the bright idea that someone could also place a DSC anywhere around the house or wherever as a cache.

I went that route and wasn’t happy with it. Get a Mesa tactical side saddle and call it a day

I literally started with a Mesa Side carrier and switched to shell cards on Velcro later because it was nice to just remove it.

Then again, the 590A1 I did it to is an ugly bugger.

I did have to glue the edges as they peeled in cold weather. No issues since doing that.

If the “car” is a Ferrari then yes, not good. If it’s an M1 Abrams and being used to #### #### up, glue away.

Double sided autobody tape is extremely common on cars and is used for emblems, decals, body mouldings, rain and rock deflectors, etc.

Provided the surface is free of dust, oil, and other contaminants there shouldn't be any issues with adhesion. Apply the tape at, or above room, temperature and then press it in place for a couple of minutes. If for some reason it comes loose, then purchase better quality 3M autobody tape.

One thing that will help allay peeling is to cut the receiver side velcro an inch longer than the cards being used. Then apply the card so there is velcro showing on either side. This way when you remove the card, the peeling force is not right at the end of the velcro.

Any recommendation for a good de-greaser? I'm thinking of going the velcro route again with a new shotgun and using autobody tape sounds better than el-cheapo NcStar velcro.

I'd go with a rag and some warm soapy water, rinse it with clean water, and then hit it with some chlorinated brake cleaner.

Varsol for the first round followed up by 99% isopropyl alcohol, I’ve never had a Velcro backing peel if I prepped the surface properly. On the receiver or a synthetic stock, nor have I had any glue stick to the stock if I wanted to remover the Velcro.

You could also purchase the TacStar shell carrier for your model of gun and then just mount the mounting plate with out the carrier and apply the velcro to the mounting plate. This way you wouldn't have to apply the velcro directly to the receiver.

That's exactly what I did. I still ended up ditching the sidesaddle altogether and went with California comp belt mounted shell-holders

Myself, I found the permanent mount hard carriers to be a real PITA, but the real joy of the Velcro jobs is that you can replenish or replace the shell holders with new or different types of shells.

And when you don’t want to have anything attached to the stock or receiver you can take the ammo card off and not have anything in the way, now that I’ve had them on a couple guns I don’t think I’d go any other way. Especially as a southpaw, I have yet to see a hard mount shell holder I could attach behind the loading port on my guns. I just cut down a shell card to 4 and slap it on.

Hmm I forgot all about those. I was waiting to see if a Canadian distributor or store would bring them in. Might be time I just ordered some from brownells and got it over with.

Those are another system altogether however, and do not keep the shells right on the shotgun. I will take both, never did find a competition belt shell holder but there are lots of pouches to do the job. OK, they are mostly for bulk carry though.

The belt mounted option does not work well at all when you are seated while reloading your gun. Any type of side saddles are better for that purpose.

Also a southpaw here and have been struggling to find something that works for my AS40. So you mount your spares behind the loading port with the velcro cards? I am going to have to try that out.

Yes, behind the loading port. I cut down a 6 shell card to 4 and keep slugs in it, on other shotguns with synthetic stocks I mount a 6 shell card on the left side of the stock as well. I didn’t want to have anything on the stock of this 870 as the laminate stock is nice and I wanted to keep it minimal. I use a belt mounted shell card holder or an S&J shell pouch that holds 3 shell cards, it works well for me.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but VangComp makes a platform that connects via receiver pins, and is meant to keep the velcro off the gun. Would be my choice if I was going that route on an 870.

As for off body carry for the cards, you can just throw them in a bag, or a belt platform like the one from Raven Concealment, or this awesome Canadian find Gladius Industrial Sewing. Still in the early evaluation, but I like the concept. They also make a 308 card.
