What do you guys use to carry ammo when out shooting? Usually, when out hunting gophers, mine is jingling around in my pocket, but was considering making a bandolier (200 45-70's take big pockets!)

You shoot gophers with a 45-70? Nice.

I'm not that good of a shot, so if I miss, at least I scare em to death!

Actually, I use a heavily modified antique Remington Rolling Block and reload black powder, so it's not expensive and I get to practice long range shooting.

I wear lottsa pawkitts, at least for gophers.
Ammo belt, side saddle, shirt with ammo loops in the top chest pawkitts.
One round in each pawkitt so no clinkitty clint.
Belt pouches.
Dependithish.

Organize the cartridges into boxes of 20, or whatever suits their load specifics.

For maximum discomfort, carry the boxes in a metal ammo box by the handle. Or for least efficiency, juggle 200 loose rounds in your fingers. Those are your starting points, so choose from there. (When hunting or hiking I distribute the weight and mass around my pockets and packs so there isn't a single large counterbalance on my hips and torso.)

Bandoliers are kind of cool but they get in the way when you're shooting, especially prone and sitting. They probably were designed for shooting and reloading on horseback.
Belt pouches are ok, small-ish rucksack or duffel bag work ok. I like fanny pack and belt pouches but it's whatever feels right for you.

If you have a 22 for gophers then just fill your pockets.

If you are going after big game then all you need is one (and maybe one more in case a bear responds to your kill)

Check eBay. I got an India made reproduction of a Martini Henry bandoleer, well made, for about $60. It has covered pouches, holds 50+; though might rattle a bit with those smaller yankee rounds. Repro US Cavalry pouches might also be an option. Currently I've been assembling a belt for my M1 rifle, using a molle belt and fragmentation grenade pouches. Each holds 2 en-bloc clips quite nicely and should contain a fistful of 45/70.

For them 45/70 rounds a browning machine gun belt holds them nicely just cut it to the length you need . For smaller ammo you can use reloaders boxes most gun store will have them . At the dollar stores you can find all kinds of plastic boxes ( tupperware kind) .:sniper::wave:
