When I bought my M48, I was advised to only use 8x57 IS ammo. That ammo's head stamp says 8x57 IS. The other day I purchased what I thought was the 8x57 IS, but when I got home and checked the box, it says 8mm Mauser, head stamp 8mm Mauser. As you can see by the pics, same bullet weight and type. The cartridge on the left is the 8x57 and the right one is the 8mm. My question, is this the same ammo and safe to use, or did I buy something I shouldn't use in my M48. Google doesn't really help nor give me a sense of confidence. I appreciate any guidance. Also, I apologize if there already is a thread on this subject.

Thanks for the video, I now have a better understanding of the IS/JS, but I am still not sure that the ammo marked 8mm Mauser is the same as 8x57 IS. Both are rimless and both have spitzer bullets.

The "8mm Mauser" ammo may be slower, I've shot some that was cast bullet velocities. Have to set the sights for 5/600 yards to hit at 200. I've read speculation that they load it this way in case somebody loads it into an old "J" bore mauser.

Your rifle has the newer "S" bore which refers to "Spitzer" or pointed bullets. Both boxes are designed for your rifle and will work fine.

They are the same cartridge. Only difference is one is downloaded and called 8mm mauser due to the north american market and lawyers (incase someone shoots this ammo in a .318" bore. SAAMI). The 8x57IS or JS is loaded closer to CIP rating of 56000 psi thus loading is more stout.
