When I was a wee newb in the EE I bought some .357 mag ammo...

All of it was hand loads. At the time I didn't know you weren't supposed to sell them there.

I tried a few rounds...they were...stout, to say the least.

Into the ammo locker they went and have sat for a while.

I'm moving and don't need to drag this crap around with me...what the heck can I do to legally/safely get rid of it all?

(I've asked the small number of people I know who hand load in town if they wanted it, to pull for bullets/brass...but had no takers.)

If they were too stout as you say for a revolver, you have a perfect excuse now to buy a .357 carbine! They should be just fine in one of those. If you have a girlfriend or wife tell them you have to because it's illegal to waste ammunition....:D

A friend of mine had bought a 686 in a package deal with some other guns, the 686 came with 500-600 rounds, some commercial and most hand loaded. He shot all the commercial and didn't trust the hand loads, so he just took them down to the local police station and told them the story, they took them in to be destroyed.
Though I would have kept them anyway to shoot them. Reloading isn't rocket science. If your worried, pull the bullets from 10% of your rounds in your stockpile at random and review his loads. Powder amounts, bullet grains, case lengths etc.

Never shoot other people's reloads.
"...review his loads..." You can't tell anything about the powder used by just looking at it.
There's no need to have them destroyed. Buy a bullet puller and find a rock.

How many rounds do you have? If its a lot, I would get a cheap reloading set up and pull the bullets and replace the powder with a known powder and amount and enjoy. If its only a few boxes, just take them to the RCMP for destruction.

Yep, I get tons of old ammo turned in at my station here in Edmonton. Usually just old timers that find a few boxes in the garage. I and my fellow officers happily "dispose" of what we can, and tear apart the handloaded stuff to use the components. Anything that can't be used is turned over to the bomb disposal trolls and turned into small craters at the range.

Erik.

bullet puller and hammer works as someone suggested or haul them into the RCMP, don't shoot them whatever you do,
