Ammo for 1874

???

Calibre? Purpose? Smokeless? Black Powder? Are you a handloader?

If you're not prepared to reload for a '74, do you really have need for a rifle you won't shoot enough to master?

You can buy off-the-shelf ammo in 30-40, 45-70 and some US suppliers load ammo in other BPCR calibres (Buffalo Arms, Black Hills, etc.) but at one hell of a price!

You can use factory 45/70 ammo in the Shiloh, however they are meant to be used somewhat like they were in the old days, cast lead bullets and black powder. Ammo of this type is not avail. in Canada, so you have to make your own. Shiloh barrels(and others) are made for shooting long lead bullets for long range shooting, esp. for long range competition such as sillywet...Loading BP cartridges is not difficult, bullets avail. from M.T. Chambers' Supply.
 
Build her in your basement in the dark of the moon with two snakeheads and aset of batwings hanging around your neck to ward off the evil no sayers!!!!

If it is something really strange that is about the only way.
Buy yourself a 45-70 and you are able to buy bullets for it and you will have a ton of fun with it.

Black powder cartridges?
 
Half of the fun of owning/shooting a BPCR is the challenge ? of developing an accurate load.
What kind of shooting do you plan on doing ? Paper ? Silhoettes ? Hunting ?
There is a BPCR shoot June 12-14th @Heffley Creeek (Kamloops).
It's not just a shoot , they have a seminar and experienced shooters willing to share their knowledge.
Great shoot to go even if you're just starting out.

mac if you are shooting black you do her yourself, Don't recall seeing anywhere that sells that. It isn't that bad you can do it the rest of us do!!!!

You could get a 38-55 which would also be asy to get stuff for.
 
If you are new to the Sharps and want to learn more, one place to start is Mike Venturino's Shooting Buffalo Guns of the Old West. If you don't want to reload, but want to buy your cartridges, you'd probably be best served with the 38-55 or the 45-70. However, I've heard rumors that the Shiloh Sharps shoots better with the non-factory 500 grain cast bullets.

Get a good bullet mold from Paul Jones.
The 540 grain Creedmoor bullets are great for long range target shooting, and hunting as well.
When you have the bullet you want you need to find the exact OAL that your rifle takes.
This is done by pushing a rod down the barrel and marking the rod at the muzzle.
Next drop a bullet into the barrel and give it a slight push to engrave the rifling.
Now push that rod into the barrel again until you touch the bullet and mark it.
Pull the rod out and measure the distance between the 2 lines.
That will be the perfect OAL for your bullet and rifle.
After that it's pretty much just a matter of finding the right powder charge.
Avoid magnum primers, like the plague, use large rifle primers.

See how much cheaper reloading is than simply buying a box??:runaway::):)
 
I think I might have gone a bit slower with the molds, dies, etc. until you try some of the designs and maybe ease into it. I have not had good luck with the Snover .410 Lyman mold and would have sold you mine for next to nothing. My three fav. moulds for those cals. are the Saeco .410-410 and Saeco .458-525gr. as well as the Paul Jones 555gr. Creedmore. I have made, used, sold many thousands of these bullets and they are great performers. You might want to look around and buy or borrow some of these items and see how they perform for you before you lay out the cash.
Each rifle/barrel is a law unto itself in what it likes and dislikes so sometimes it may be worth it to experiment before shelling out the cash.
