So I just bought a used, rifled barelled 12G, Remi for a hog hunting trip next spring. Its got a red-dot scope which I want to sight in. I picked up four boxes of cheap Remington rifled slugs ( 7/8 oz ) that I figured would be good at sighting in at 100m. However, on the box it reccommends that these rounds are best through a smooth bore shotgun.

1. Is this ammo still ok for sighting in with a rifled barell?
2. Are sabots more appropriate ?
3. For shooting hogs, what is the opinion on slug loads ? 2.75 or 3" ?

thanks

Hi. Rifled slugs are for smooth bores. You need sabotted slugs. Regular slugs won't damage anything, but they won't shoot as well. They have 'fins' on 'em that take the place of rifling. That's the theory anyway.
One option is to buy a smooth bore with rifle sights. Doesn't have to be made by Remington. Be cheaper to buy sabotted slugs though. Paid a bit over $200 a few years back for one at Goble's, here in London. The same thing with 'Remington' stamped on it was $100 or so more.
A hog won't know or care if the slug that killed it was 2.75" or 3". Felt recoil is less with a 2.75" though. You may want to think about putting 'ghost ring' iron sights on too. William's Gunsights sells 'em. Not stupid expensive. Epp's is a dealer.

Tks for the advice on this. I'll get some sabots, probably 2.75's, after I get on zero with the new (old) sight that came with the gun. I'll be hunting in Sask, in the bush, so doubt I'll be shooting much past 75-100yards. I like the idea of ghost rings, although, this baby came with pretty good rifle sights if the red-dot goes tits up !

Plan on trying out several types of sabot slugs to find the best choice for your particular gun. This experimentation can be expensive, but slug shotguns are a lot like .22's, i.e. each individual gun can exhibit widely different accuracy with different loads.
