Ammo for Snider-Enfield?

I just acquired a DC (Dominion of Canada) marked Snider-Enfield. It's in beautiful shape with a mint shiny bore.

I believe it to be .577 calibre. Does anyone know where I can get a few cartridges to try it out?
How costly is the ammo?
Does anyone load modern equivalent ammo?

reload shockys gold black powder sub in mine . p,s, have new brass formed from 24 guage shot shell $4.75 each . mine shot 1 and 1/2 feet high at 100yds .have some lead that i paid $12 for 50 . if you live near stratford ont you could come too my place load some and shoot at our club . cheers FRANK
 
"...How costly is the ammo?..." Very. Shooter's Choice carries Bertram .577 Snider brass at $136.95 per 20. Epp's carries the brass too. No mention of cost or make on their site.
Buffalo Arms lists the dies at $186.69US. $19.59US for the shell holder. Needs a 1" press too. 1-12.
This guy has dies at $175Cdn. He's in Red Deer, AB. No W's. nofac.ca/index.htm
This guy lists Lee dies at $69.50US. Uses a Lee Universal shell holder #22. No W's. //fmreloading.com/

Cantom - does it happen to have any unit markings on the butt plate? I lucked out when I picked one up a month or 2 back - it was issued to the Montmagny Battalion.

Last year I brought my first ever rifle, a Snider Enfield. Now I am reloading & firing it on a semi regular basis. It's great fun but also a lot to learn.

Nice Enfield rifle with the conversion to Snider done by the LAC. Bore size is larger than .577" so a round ball at .590" shoots the very best in these. Magtech brass (24 guage) will work and the last I bought was about $20.00 for twenty-five. This brass takes a large rifle primer. Do not refinish or scrub the rifle as this will halve the value. I apologise Cantom....I just looked back to see who posted this. You wouldn't alter a rifle. I have round ball here. Where are you in Canada...a big place? <hurlbutc@rideau.net>....e-mail me. Dave

Originally an 1860 Muzzle loading rifle (Enfield 1853 pattern rifled musket) made by Enfield Lock, converted to a Snider enfield MkII** by London Arms Co. (The London Armoury Company was a London arms manufactory that existed from 1856 until 1866. It was the major arms supplier to the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War.)

The stock is a LAC stock "interesting", I would summize the rifle came into be switched over and because the stocks needed to be inletted for the snider action. Did they supplied a new stock from LAC, I see it's an 1863 dated stock? Nice to see the nipple protector is still there.

The 27 stamp is for the 27th Lambton Infantry Battalion based in Lambton Cty, Ontario, head quarters in Sarnia, founded 1866 , authorised strength of 344 in 7 Coys in 1885.

I re-load for both of my sniders and I got the brass, dies and bullet mold all from buffalo arms. Lee dies from buffalo arms were quite cheap at $84 dollars.
The brass are $3.85 a piece and are brand new.

Shooting that Snider

Brass is available at Williams Bros in Port Perry, Ontario, they also have Lee Dies, approx $110. the brass runs around $5.00 a piece, the dies come with a shell holder.Ya need some FFG and ya should good ta go, regards Bully
 
CGN'r by the name "Beater" loaded up 20 for me with new brass. If you don't want to go buy everything to load them yourself I would highly recommend you talk to him, he did a real tip-top job for me!

p.s Lee dies have a 1 1/4 -12 thread size
