I recently received 2 1886 steyr rifles from my farther in law both in amazing condition. He tells me he has own them for almost 50 years and has yet to shoot them. The ammo it take is a 8 x 60 R. I did a little looking on line butbeing a new member to the site I figured maybe someone here could help me locate some ammo.would really like to shoot these guns and I know the father in law would love to. Any help or direction would be very appreciated thanks in advance

I think what you have is the kropachek round. No ammo is currently made and ammo is very scarce. Sorry to say this but it is also a very difficult round to convert from other cartridges.

Ammo can be made from 348 Winchester by necking down in an 8mm Lebel die and setting the shoulder back until they chamber and chamfering the rear of the rim to fit the bolt face. Sample rounds show up at gun shows from time to time. Production of this round ceased in 1928.

Check out the Rusty Wood Trading site, under Bertram brass. The 8 X 60 Kropatschek is listed there, under special order. Reloadable brass may be available, but is pricey.

I reload for my M1886 and the only brass that is available (I think) is Bertram. The Krop brass has quite a pronounced chamfer on the rim and is a totally different beast to the 8x60S case. I have formed some from 348 Win but it needs to be chamfered and by the time you have got it just right there is very little meat left on the rim which makes it easy to rip the rim off when sizing.
There was quite a bit of surplus ammo about a few years back but it was mostly wooden tipped blanks/training rounds and the cases would more often than not split on firing, so back to square one!
When you get to the point of getting the components for shooting the old girl, slug the bore carefully as the bores vary-mine slugs out to 8.04mm bore and 8.407mm on the grooves (a hardly used, mirror bore) whilst others will quite happily shoot a 0.329" bullet from a common Lee mould. I resize a 0.340" gas check boolit from a NOE mould and it works great with about 11 grains of Unique.
Lovely rifles to shoot, surprisingly accurate and a buttery smooth action, hope you enjoy it.

Thank you so much silfield for the info

No problem..
Any more info required, please dont hesitate to ask. I came across a few hurdles when learning to reload for the Krop and ended up having to modify dies, make sizing dies and make expanders for the case mouth but it was worth it in the end as its a sweet rifle to shoot.
Good luck.
