Took my SKS out to the range yesterday and my buddy noted that there was a lot of carbon on my spent casings and lots around the chamber area as well. He said it's way above the normal amount but I am used to this as its my first sks and only 6 months into owning and shooting firearms. Any ideas as to what this could be? Is it just dirty ammo or am I looking at something worse or possibly dangerous? shooting a 1952 Russian hardwood stock and shooting the bulk corrosive ammo from wolverine, its Bulgarian surplus I believe. Had no issues shooting, was accurate once I found where to hold on the 100 yard gong, everything fed and extracted perfectly.

Thanks for the advice

Did you happen to take any pics by chance? Some surplus 7.62x39 does run pretty dirty. If you had no other problems at all , its likely dirty ammo. I get a bit more fouling chamber and case wise with steel case ammo over when I shoot brass as well.

Sorry no pictures. The cases weren't steel either they were bronze coloured at least but magnetic so i guess some steel in there? Why would the chamber and area be so full of carbon then, even the bolt and carrier and where those move had a lot when I took it apart to clean it after the shoot. its like a lot of the gas was escaping in the wrong direction.

Never had it happen with SKS's or VZ58's but it always happens with one particular SVT. Spend shells always come out covered in black residue. Sometimes I could barely see copper through all the residue, that's how bad it gets smoked. I've tried several kinds of milsurp, only ammo that doesn't get all covered in carbon is Barnaul green lacquer coated stuff. So far that SVT been working just fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

How many rounds did you put through it in the session?
Also did you clean the gas system and gas tube before taking it out shooting? Are all gas ports clean and clear? Maybe you did have a bit of blowback if gas system was plugged off a bit by cosmoline or dirt. Give it a good full clean and see if same thing happens next time around.

Wasn't too many about 40. But I was pretty diligent in my initial cleaning had break clean followed by rem oil and action cleaner through all the metal parts it . It is all still apart and had hot water run through last night twice and a good cleaning with rem oil and action cleaner this time so I guess we will see. I was hoping for something fixable to cut down on the cleaning time. I'll find out a little more next time it can be brought out possibly. Buddy mentioned maybe a headspace issue but everything seated fine and extracted so I don' know about that

I sure hope not. I got way too much ammo to burn off plus I was told that green coated stuff isn't something thats good to be touching. Not sure why, was just advised it was bad.

The green lacquer, or any colour of lacquer, has a tendency to stick in the chamber of a hot rifle but not usually a problem with the SKS.
It is normal for the SKS to have some blowback onto the case, chamber, bolt and bolt carrier. It is loosely made for battle reliability, not accuracy.;)

why is it bad to touch with my hands though? I expected some blow back just by seeing all the cases on the ground but this is apparently a lot. I wont worry too much I guess and just stay way from green cases and learn to just shoot it a lot to justify the longer cleaning process

The bronze or copper I copper washed steel cases, they tend not to expand quite as much as brass so you will get a bit of soot bypassing and some surplus ammo is dirtier than others, I wouldn't worry unless it affects the operation or accuracy ! The sks is a dirty girl, that's one of the reasons I like her!

I can't think of any reason not to "touch" lacquered ammo, perhaps the fellow who said that, meant not to "use" lacquered ammo because of chamber sticking. I prefer lacquered over copper washed because it stripper-loads easier and causes fewer stovepipes.

Ammo is "not good to be touched" to begin with according to lieberals. Lead and all that crap you know :) On a serious note, I don't don't know who told you not to touch green lacquered ammo with your hands. All of of 5.45x39 we shot out of AK's back in the old country was like that. Even blank rounds. I don't think I ever saw anything but that stuff. Everyone shot it during their service time. It's not toxic or anything.

ya after a quick min on the google I can't find a reason why it would be bad to touch. Maybe it stained his fingers or his sks didn't like it. Who knows I got 1300 rounds to shoot. That should hold a bit unless i find somewhere closer to shoot

Just shoot it :) I never had and issue with lacquered ammo, no staining or flakes chipping off and getting all over mag well/chamber area unlike PPU "red tip" blanks we shoot during reenactment and have red flakes from the tips all over the internals.
